General Provisions Labels have to: : This Regulation provides the basis for the assurance of an high level of consumer protection in relation to food information. Labels have to: : Not be misleading Be accurate, clear and easy to understand Not attribute or property for curing human disease
List of mandatory particulars (art. 9) Name of the food* LIST OF INGREDIENTS ALLERGENS Quantitative indications (if necessary) Net quantity of the food* Date of minimum durability or “use by” date Any special storage conditions and/or conditions of use Name or business name and address of the food operator Country of origin or place of provenance where provided for Instructions for use where it would be difficult to make appropriate use of the food in the absence Alcoholic strength by volume (if contains more then 1.2% of alcohol)* NUTRITION DECLARATION * Must be on the same field of label
Nutrition Declaration Specific order Clear format Same field vision The mandatory nutrition information does not have to be written on the back of the pack, it can be anywhere on the package. You must declare the following items: The amounts (in grams (g)) of fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, protein and salt Energy value (in both kilojoules(KJ) and kilocalories(kcal)
You must print the mandatory nutrition declaration using a font size where the “x-height” is a minimum of 1.2 mm (or 0.9 if the largest surface of your package is less the 80 cm2) Legend Ascender line Cap line Mean line Baseline Descender line X-height (min. 1.2 mm) Font size
List of Ingredients & Nutrition Declaration It includes all the ingredients of the food, in descending order of weight. Shall be headed or preceded by a suitable heading which consists of or includes the word “ingredients”.
Specific Information Accompanying the name of the food “Added water” When this exceeds 5% of the weight of the finished product (for meat products). “Formed Meat”/ “Formed Fish” For meat / fish products which give the impression that they are made of a whole piece of meat / fish but actually consist of different pieces combined together. “Added Proteins” Indication of the presence of added proteins as such and their origin, when they are different from the animal origin of the product.
Cereals containing gluten Allergens The allergen details need to appear in the ingredient list. They must be emphasized through a typeset that clearly distinguishes it from the rest of the list of ingredients. peanuts fish soya nuts Cereals containing gluten celery lupin milk sesame Sulphur dioxide shellfish molluscs eggs mustard
Voluntary Information Voluntary declaration of supplementary nutrients: Mono - unsaturates Polyunsaturates Polyols Starch Fibre Any of the vitamins or minerals listed in point 1 of Part A of Annex XIII, Regulation 1169/2011 They have to be present in significant amounts (see Annex XIII, Regulation 1169/2011 ) If you declare Vitamins & Minerals, you have to provide % reference intake for them in addition to absolute amount
Declaration of other nutrients Nutrition or Health Claim A nutrition or health claim is any claim which states, suggests or implies that a food or a drink has particular beneficial nutritional properties or effect on health. You may declare only the nutrients contained in the mandatory and supplementary lists in the nutrition declaration You must declare the amount of the substance in the same field of vision as the nutrition labelling (but not within the nutrition table).
“Front of Pack” (FoP) nutrition labelling Voluntary Information Energy value Energy value + 4 If you choose to provide this repeat information, it must be in one of the following formats: Energy value (KJ and kcal) alone OR Energy value + 4 (Fat, Saturates, Sugars, Salt in grams) You can either put it or not but when you put it, it must be this way!
