Safe Technology and Digital Citizenship An Overview of Canyons School District Systems and Supports and Digital Citizenship Plan Speaker: Kylie

“...involve school community councils in an on-going discussion (at least annually) about creating a safe technology environment for students in public schools.” HB 213 Safe Technology Utilization and Digital Citizenship in Public Schools Speaker: Janae

(i.e. Laptops, Desktops, iPads, etc.) Access to Technology Students and teachers have extensive access to varying forms of technology at DPMS. (i.e. Laptops, Desktops, iPads, etc.) Speaker: Mat Refer to handout. Teachers at DPMS are very open to using (new) technology and well-versed in incorporating it into lessons, units, etc. (Canvas/Skyward, PowerPoint, YouTube, Robots, Prezi, Google Survey, etc.) What are the main applications, programs, and sites used in different classes, grade levels, and subject areas? Teachers are present, LanSchool to monitor, etc. Concern: PERSONAL DEVICES

5 carts currently in processing (This will mean 190 new devices!) Access to Technology Total devices: 1821 Average age: 2.5 5 carts currently in processing (This will mean 190 new devices!) Speaker: Mat Library open before and after school...also during lunch with lunch pass. Teachers have access in their rooms or can check out labs from the library.

Classroom Favorites Class Assignments, etc. Grades Research Google Docs Speaker: Kylie

District Filters The district utilizes the Lightspeed Systems content filter This filter detects and/or blocks access to inappropriate material on the internet. It draws from a database of more than one billion entries and allows CSD to customize allow and block lists. When a user attempts to visit a site, the policy for the user is checked and the site is either blocked or allowed. It is intended to protect from inadvertent exposure but cannot prevent a determined user from finding inappropriate content. Speaker: Janae

School Levels Elementary, Middle, and High schools (as well as staff) each have unique filtering settings. They are more restrictive for lower levels and least restrictive for staff. YouTube is blocked at the elementary level and allowed at all other levels. Facebook is blocked at elementary and middle school levels and allowed at all other levels. Google Images is allowed but forced to “Safesearch” for all users. Weebly is allowed for all users. Tumblr is blocked for all users. Speaker: Janae Graph is featured on the handout

Management Systems The IT department utilizes several management systems including: LanSchool for Macs and PCs, Google Apps for Education for ChromeOS, and Lightspeed MDM for student iOS devices. These systems can add additional control. Speaker: Janae

Inappropriate Content Students should report any inappropriate information to a teacher, administrator, counselor, school resource officer, hall monitor, librarian, or office staff member. Reports from the student will then be taken to the appropriate school administrator who will report it to CSD IT. Students can anonymously report information via the SafeUT app. If alerted by a parent, teacher or principal that inappropriate behavior is suspected, IT will pull the internet history of the user in question. CSD systems track the last 40 days of internet traffic for all users. Speaker: Janae

Digital Citizenship The District employs a train the trainer model. A teacher in each school has received specialized training on Digital Citizenship. This teacher is the school Digital Citizenship Coordinator and receives a stipend to provide training to staff, students and parents throughout the year. The Digital Citizenship Coordinator will present the school’s yearly plan in this meeting. Speaker: Kylie

Yearly Digital Citizenship Plan Monthly- DCC sends out Digital Citizenship Lesson to DPMS staff to share with students (Lessons are rotated between content teachers). Also, new webpage will contain the lessons for each month and those lessons will also be sent via Skyalert to parents/guardians of students. August- Canvas/Skyward Instruction for parents and students at Back to School Night January- Faculty Training Meeting February- White Ribbon Week March- NetSmartz assembly or guest speaker to discuss being safe and responsible online/while using social media, etc. Speaker: Kylie
