Practice your Field sketches

Label the arrows to show . . . . . What they are pointing at What this says about the QOL of this area (number 1s are done for you) 1. Lots of cars in the street ____________________________________________________________________ Trees lining the road ____________________________________________________________________ Kerbs in good condition ____________________________________________________________________ Lots of blocks of flats ____________________________________________________________________ Cars parked on street ____________________________________________________________________

How do I structure my background information? L/O: To recognise good background information and explain your evidence fully Starter: You have begun this already! Which QOL factors did you search for on Triana and Tomares. NOTE: Do not make the mistake of just assuming that Tomares has a better QOL beacause it is further out of the city! ADD SITE – Search by area - very useful site

CA Suggested Structure Introduction Hypothesis Definition of QOL Land Models Method (Table) How you will investigate this Data Collection Collecting data to investigate Results Graphs and description of graphs  Conclusion Are hypotheses correct? Which area has a better QOL?   Evaluation How could you improve? Limitations of our data Background Info Research on the two areas

How to write a good background (Point/Evidence/Explain) Point: Say what this paragraph is all about e.g. culture e.g. Both Triana and Tomares have a variety of local churches Evidence: Give a “quote” and ref from a web site. One in Triana and one in Tomares. e.g. One of Triana’s churches is San Ana Church in Barrio Leon. This is a quote from their website. “We know that people have many needs, and for this reason we have activities and programmes that are aimed at a wide cross-section of people: Children, Youth, Pensioners and those in-between.” http://www.lewishamadventist.org.uk/pages/about-us Explanation: Explain how this would affect local people’s QOL. e.g. This would improve the people of Triana’s quality of life as the church offers a place to pray and to interact with others of all ages Then do the same for a Tomares Church. . . . .

First Task - Recognising good and poor background research Your Task You will look at 2 examples of background research from a previous CW (in UK) on Peckham and Farningham Most contain some good parts but . . . . . . . . . . Each has made a classic GCSE student mistake Can you spot the mistakes?

Background research of Peckham and Farningham History of both areas This is information on Farningham’s History. “The village of Farningham originates from Saxon times. A Saxon cemetery was partially excavated near Charton Manor in the 1930s. Three Roman villas and three Roman farmsteads are known to have existed within the Parish of Farningham.” http://www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0004/84217/Farningham-CAA.pdf This is information on Peckham’s History. “'Peckham' is a Saxon place name meaning the village of the River Peck, a small stream that ran through the district until it was enclosed in 1823. Archaeological evidence indicates earlier Roman occupation in the area, although the name of this settlement is lost.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peckham What’s good about this What are the mistakes? NO EXPLAINATION

Background research of Peckham and Farningham Social Factors - Local Pubs Both areas have a choice of local pubs serving good quality food. Examples include the Lion at Farningham and the Montpelier in Peckham. The Lion Pub describes itself as, “A country pub & restaurant oozing rural charm and rustic character. Our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu” This shows that Farningham has a good quality of life, socially, because there is a beautiful pub where locals can go and socialise over a drink or go out with friends and family for a meal. The Montpelier talks about its food, “we endeavour to offer delicious, un-pretentious, rustic pub food. Cooked well, good portions, local produce and happy meat.” This shows that Peckham has a good social quality of life. What’s good about this What are the mistakes?

Background Research Your task is to investigate the areas of Triana and Tomares You are to write 2 sides (approx) and will be part of your Course Work. Work can be handwritten or typed (typed recommend). Be sure to reference any websites you use, below the relevant paragraph. Below are some suggestions for topics you should concentrate on . . . You may like to use these as subtitles for each area How are they significant/important? – Def include. Could link to any areas below Environmental – pollution, traffic, green issues, recycling, solutions? Economic – How rich is the area? House prices? Budgets? Expensive shops and services or cheaper? Social – how do people interact? Pubs? Clubs? Groups? Services? Issues/solutions? Cultural – ethnic diversity, religion, culture of area? Physical – the surrounding countryside, green spaces Political e.g. what does the local authority provide, focus on, prioritise, issues, solutions, Pressure groups? Historical background (brief) - What was it originally, it’s function/use? When was it built? Important changes? Don’t go back more than 100 years or it could get irrelevant! (You do not have to cover all 8 categories but ensure you have covered at least 5 comparable quotes with Point/Evidence/Explain from each area)

Some ideas of useful websites http://www.salir.com/ (socialising - then search Triana or Tomares) http://www.tomares.es/node/672 (environmental) http://sevillaciudad.sevilla.abc.es/triana/economia-negocios-triana/ (economy Triana) http://sevilla.abc.es/20110511/sevilla/sevi-arenas-tomares-como-faro-201105112148.html (politics Tomares)

To save time . . . . We will build up a bank of web sites that we can all use. Once you find some, please add it to this PPT! Then it can be seen by all – BUT DO NOT KEEP IT OPEN OR NO ONE ELSE WILL BE ABLE TO ACCESS IT!
