Working with Faculty Schedule expectations Get to know your professor Ask for help when you’re struggling Take advantage of their expertise Email & communication etiquette Schedule expectations- college professors expect you to know the syllabus and when things are due. They will not give you constant reminders to get your work done. You are responsible for understanding the syllabus and schedule of assignments. If something is unclear, ask so that you do not run into problems down the road. Get to know your professor-  A professor won’t always be able to discern who you are unless you make yourself stand out. Introduce yourself to the professor either after class or at their office. Answer questions in class, ask questions when you have their and contribute to class discussions. Being known in class shows the professor that you take the class seriously and that you want to learn. Ask for help when you’re struggling- Professors do want you to succeed, but they will not hunt you down if you start struggling and ask if you need help. Professors want you to take responsibility for your own academics and take the initiative to go to their office hours and see them if you do not understand something or are falling behind. I know some people in high school rarely went to teachers for help, but going to a professor for help is what they’re there for, and sometimes it can mean the difference between passing and failing. Take advantage of their expertise- Remember that when you’re talking to a professor, you’re talking to someone who is at the top of their field. They can advise you in what you should do to get the career you want, help you get scholarships and write you letters of recommendation for internships, school, jobs and more. Email & communication etiquette- When emailing or communicating with a professor, it is important to put your best professional self forward. Use proper language and be as respectful as you can. When you are respectful you will be met with that same level of respect.

Classroom Etiquette Read the syllabus! Arrive on time and prepared for class Think before you speak or react Cell phone use Read the Syllabus- the syllabus for your class will outline specifics for how your professor runs class. This includes certain expectations about how the classroom should be. For example some professors do not allowed food or drink in their classrooms. The syllabus will give you a heads up about this before you bring a whole breakfast to your 8am class, where the professor would rather you didn’t. Arrive on time and prepared for class- If you’re going to be late, let the professor know via email ahead of time or as soon as you can. You may also want to check in with the professor after class to communicate to them why you were late. The academic environment is meant to be free and open for discussion of ideas. Not everyone will always have an opinion that you agree with. If someone shares an opinion that offends you and you cannot react in an appropriate way, give yourself a minute to collect your thoughts before responding. If you cannot respond in a respectful manner, talk to your professor after class about the discussion. Cell phone use- Most professors will ask that you do not use your cell phone in class. Make sure to check the syllabus for more expectations. If you need your phone out because you are expecting an important call, just talk to the professor beforehand to discuss their expectations.
