Bell Ringer 2/6/17 If you were in charge of colonizing Africa, what areas would you choose? Explain why

Empire Building in Africa Section 14.2 Empire Building in Africa

Empire Building in Africa The Berlin Conference: Seven countries carved up Africa for their own Imperialist purposes – Great Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain, and Portugal.

Empire Building in Africa Egypt was one of the most progressive countries in Africa due to the leadership of Muhammad Ali. He modernized the military, set up public education, and created small industry.

Empire Building in Africa Great Britain felt they needed control of the Suez canal as a “lifeline” to India (which gave them enormous profits)

Reason British Wanted Suez Canal

Empire Building in Africa Italy suffered a humiliating defeat in their invasion of Ethiopia. Italy was the only European state defeated by an African state. Later, Italy invaded & seized Tripoli (renamed Libya).

Empire Building in Africa Only 2 African nations were able to avoid occupation: Liberia & Ethiopia. Berlin Conference – purpose was to settle territory claims in Africa among Europeans. One group missing from the conference – the Africans.

Why would the modern boundaries cause problems?

African nations without Colonization (drawn 1844) African nations today

Empire Building in Africa Hypocrisy in European values was evident in the partition of Africa. While western nations proclaimed democracy, equality, and political freedom, none were applied to Africa. Mainly, because of racism and the feelings of white superiority.
