WATER SOFTENER VALVE’S AND FUNCTION Troubleshooting WATER SOFTENER VALVE’S AND FUNCTION The five cycle softening process. Service. Raw water passes “down flow” through the resin bed. Backwash. The resin bed is fluidized loosening the resin particles and removing suspended matter captured during the service cycle. Brine Draw. A brine solution is applied “down flow” to the resin bed removing the hardness ions from the resin matrix. Slow Rinse. The brine is rinsed from the resin bed at a low flow rate to reduce water use. Fast Rinse. The resin is rinsed at a higher rate to remove all brine from the bed. After the fast rinse cycle, the softener is on Standby until returned to Service. Page 3.1 A water softener valve accomplishes the five cycle softening process. These CYCLES are: A more detailed discussion is listed in the catalog for your review at a latter time. VALVE FUNCTION Service During the service cycle, the raw water enters the top of the tank, flows through the inlet flow distributor, passes through the resin bed and exits the tank through the gravel support bed and under drain system. 11/14/2018
VALVE FUNCTION Backwash In backwash, the raw water enters the bottom of the bed through the under drain system and exits through the top of the tank to waste. Backwash is up flow and the resin bed is fluidized. (10-12 Minutes) 11/14/2018
VALVE FUNCTION Brining Troubleshooting VALVE FUNCTION Brining The resin has limited exchange capacity, which must be restored periodically through a process known as regeneration. (15-25 Minutes) Brining The resin has limited exchange capacity, which must be restored periodically through a process known as regeneration. 11/14/2018 Water King Service Seminar
VALVE FUNCTION Slow Rinse After the brine valve has closed, fresh water continues to flow through the eductor. Since the brine valve is closed, no brine is drawn and the flow rate is constrained by the eductor. This continues until the softener sequences to the next cycle, fast rinse. (40 Minute min.) 11/14/2018
VALVE FUNCTION Fast Rinse The fast rinse cycle is a service to waste cycle. The inlet water flows through the service piping and thru the bed but rather than being routed to the softener outlet, it is routed to drain or waste. (10-15 Minutes) 11/14/2018
TROUBLE SHOOTING FAILURE TO DRAW BRINE Possible Cause Solution Brine shut-off valve closed. Low water pressure. Plugged nozzle. Air leaks in brine line. Worn piston seals. Restriction in brine valve or brine line. Restriction in flow control. Brine well fills too fast, shuts off brine valve prematurely. Sediment buildup in bottom of brine tank Piston out of adjustment. Open the brine shut-off valve. Water Pressure s/b at least 25 psi (172 kPa). Clean the nozzle and throat. Clean the joints, union seats and use pipe tape on the threads to insure tight seals. Tighten bonnet on the brine shut-off valve. Replace seals Remove the restriction Remove mineral deposits from the flow control buttons. Clean or replace Clean brine tank Re-adjust piston and motor cam. Consult factory. 11/14/2018 Water King Service Seminar
TROUBLE SHOOTING MINERAL TO SERVICE Possible Cause Solution Distributor Broken in tank bottom. Unit installed backwards Remove the control valve, tank adapter, mineral and gravel and distributor. Inspect distributor. Distributors should be checked before gravel is installed. Use caution. Check plumbing. Inlet port on the control valve is marked with an arrow pointing into the valve. Mineral to service. 11/14/2018 Water King Service Seminar
TROUBLE SHOOTING Possible Cause Solution Solenoid valve not closing INSUFFICIENT SERVICE FLOW RATE. Possible Cause Solution Solenoid valve not closing Diaphragm valve not opening fully Vent port in the side of the diaphragm plugged by scale. Disassemble and clean. No water should flow out of the solenoid valve when tubing is disconnected and control valve in Service position. Clean the shaft with fine emery paper. Clean the port with a fine wire or nail. Insufficient service flow rate. 11/14/2018 Water King Service Seminar
TROUBLE SHOOTING Possible Cause Solution HARD WATER TO SERVICE No salt. Salt bridging. Low or no brine draw Bypass valve Float setting Brine shut-off valve Electrical power Timer erratic (Does not regenerate at the proper time.) Build up on grid plate. Improper salt dosage, low salting units. Leaking bypass in plumbing. Twin units, one is hard, one unit soft. Make sure salt is in the brine tank Carefully break up salt with a stick. See No. 1 Fully close valve and outlet valves. If water runs to service, disassemble and repair if necessary. Adjust float Make sure the brine shut-off valve is fully opened. Check power supply. Replace the timer Clean grid plate Increase salt dosage, remove a plug. Shut off the inlet, outlet and bypass of the conditioner, check for the flow of water at a soft water faucet. Remove and clean brine director. Hard Water to Service. 11/14/2018 Water King Service Seminar
TROUBLE SHOOTING Possible Cause Solution Trash in Brine Tank. OVERFLOWING BRINE TANK Possible Cause Solution Trash in Brine Tank. Float binding. Faulty brine valve seal Fittings defective. Empty the brine tank and clean. Flush valve. Refill brine tank with a clean bagged, evaporated, processed type of salt. Make sure the float is not binding on the brine well Replace the brine valve seal Loose or cracked fitting in the brine valve; tighten or replace. Overflowing Brine tank is indicative of possible; (next slide) 11/14/2018 Water King Service Seminar
TROUBLE SHOOTING Possible Cause Solution No power UNIT WILL NOT REGENERATE AUTOMATICALLY Possible Cause Solution No power Timer motor operation Valve motor relay switches. Timer motor relay switches. Check all power connections. Timer motor running? If not, replace. Adjust or replace valve motor micro switch. Adjust or replace the micro switch. When the unit will not regenerate automatically, possible causes are: and solutions: (next slide) 11/14/2018 Water King Service Seminar
TROUBLE SHOOTING Possible Cause Solution CONTROL VALVE DOES NOT COMPLETE CYCLE Possible Cause Solution Sand and hot water backup will damage piston seals and may cause piston to bind If sand is present, water should be pre-filtered. Prevent hot water from entering the conditioner. CONTROL VALVE DOES NOT COMPLETE CYCLE: POSSIBLE CAUSE, SOLUTION. (NEXT SLIDE) 11/14/2018 Water King Service Seminar
TROUBLE SHOOTING Possible Cause Solution Internal to control valve LEAK TO DRAIN. Possible Cause Solution Internal to control valve Internal to drain shut-off valve. Check the plunger position. Check drain shut-off. LEAK TO DRAIN 11/14/2018 Water King Service Seminar
TROUBLE SHOOTING Possible Cause Solution Plugged injector. SALT IN SERVICE LINE . Possible Cause Solution Plugged injector. Low pressure Drain line or flow control restricted. Brine line restricted or crimped Excessive amount of brine in the brine tank Insufficient rinse time Intermittent pressure drop behind unit. Clean the nozzle and throat of injector. Min pressure of 25 psi (172 kPa) Remove restriction. Free brine line Adjust brine float. Check for loose or missing brine plugs. Increase fast rinse time. Install a check valve in the inlet line to the unit. Salt in service line indicates; Solutions are; (next slide) 11/14/2018 Water King Service Seminar
