ASSP Foundation Scholarship Program How to Create a Successful Application

More than $370,000 in scholarships available to OSH students Nearly 100 awards Multiple awards at $10,000-$15,000 Only fill out a single application and be considered for every single award Award winners notified in April, 2019 2018 Program Overview

Prerequisites Seeking a degree in OSH or a related field Graduating in May 2018 or later Undergraduate students 3.0 GPA 60 credit hours earned prior to submitting application (24 if seeking an Associate’s degree) Graduate students 3.5 GPA Enrolled in a OSH safety program (admittance letter needed if transcript is unavailable) Prerequisites

Application Narrative Section Five required short answer questions Each allows for a maximum of 500 words Questions What drew you to the field of safety and how has your education affected your views of the field? What goals do you have for yourself, both in school and beyond, and what plans to do you have for reaching them? What leadership and volunteer positions have you taken within the safety community and what positions do you envision in the future? What is the greatest takeaway from your current year in school? What will you do with that knowledge to impact people throughout your career? What makes you stand out as an applicant? Spend time on your answers. The easiest way to be denied an award is to answer the questions with a single sentence. Application Narrative Section

Application Narrative Section Good Response to “How do you plan to reach your career goals?” “Each of the last five semesters of taking PhD courses simultaneous to teaching, I have been able to immediately apply the science of safety at a much deeper level. I find additional creativity and am emboldened in the generation of effective, relevant assignments to assess the student’s grasp of the material. My goals would include producing relevant, published research and service necessary to achieve tenure and full professor status and remain in the service of the university and the safety profession for the next 15-18 years…” (continues to total of 412 words) Poor Response to “Why are you seeking a degree in OSH?” “I want to make people safe. I've always wanted to have an avenue like social media that could reach a lot of people where I could show them different ways to save someone's life in emergency cases. I didn't really know how to make this happen so I decided to take safety classes.” (complete answer) Application Narrative Section

Each application will be reviewed by 3 members of the Scholarship and Grant Review Committee Reviewers will grade applications based on: Academic performance such as GPA and curriculum rigor Leadership activity in ASSP and the broader safety community Motivations for entering the field and how you plan on achieving your goals as an OSH professional Letters of recommendation that speak to the above aspects This year you must submit one letter of recommendation with the option of including two additional letters. Use all three if you can! How Are You Graded?
