By offering these certifications students leave high school, college and career ready.

Completer Paths for Health Science In Health Science we will have 3 unit completer and 4 unit completer paths. Whatever works best for the student, school, district, based on course offerings and time offerings. 3 unit completer paths will be more focused on a clear pathway, where the 4 unit completer paths will remain the same as they have in the past a more flexible 2 + 2 Two required courses plus any other 2 units. For a total of 4 units. The following slides show sample formats.

Sample 4 unit Completer Pathways: Health Science: 1 Sample 4 unit Completer Pathways: Health Science: 1. HS1, HS2, HS3 HS Clinical Studies or HS-WBL etc. 2. HS1, HS 2, PLTW PBS, PLTW HBS Sports Medicine: 1. SM1, SM2, Med Term or HS3, SM-WBL etc. 2. SM 1, SM 2, HS 1, Med Term EMS 1. EMS1, EMS2, EMS3, & WBL 2. EMS1, EMS2, Med Term or HS 3, &WBL PLTW – BMS 1. PBS, HBS, MI and BI 2. PBS, HBS, Med Term, WBL

Sample 3 Unit Completer Pathways with available industry certifications as a 3 unit completer Health Science Completers will have completed successfully (overall 75%) a minimum of 1 unit in HS1, and 1 unit in HS2 plus Health Science 3, Medical Terminology, PLTW BMS Human Body Systems, AHS 102, AHS 104 Certifications Available: BLS, CERT, Paid Feeding Assistant, Career Safe OSHA Health Science Safety Sports Medicine Completers will have completed successfully (overall 75%) a minimum of 1 unit of SM1 and 1 unit of SM2 plus Sports Med 3, Health Science 3, Medical Terminology, PLTW BMS Human Body Systems, AHS 102 or AHS 104 Certifications Available: BLS, CERT, OSHA Health Science Safety Certification EMS Completers will have completed successfully (overall 75%) a minimum of 1 unit of EMS 1 and 1 unit of EMS 2 plus EMS 3, Health Science 3, Medical Terminology, PLTW BMS Human Body Systems, AHS 102, AHS 104 Certifications Available: First Responder, BLS, CERT, EMT –Basic, OSHA Health Science Safety PLTW Completers must have completed successfully (overall 75%) a minimum of PBS and HBS or the first two courses in PLTW BMS plus Medical Interventions, Health Science 3, or Medical Terminology, AHS 102, AHS 104 Certifications Available: BLS, CERT, OSHA Health Science Safety Certification Health Informatics Completers must have completed successfully (overall 75%) a minimum of 1 unit of HI 1, and 1 unit in HI 2 plus HI 3, Health Science 3, Medical Terminology, PLTW BMS Human Body Systems, AHS 102, AHS 104 Certifications Available: OSHA Health Science Safety Certification, BLS Work-based Learning Credit may not count as one of the units in a 3 unit Completer This is a strict pathway and only the courses listed will be counted towards a 3 unit completer path.

If your school does not offer HS3 or Med Term… For your 3rd CATE unit Your choices are: PLTW HBS, DE AHS 102, DE AHS 104 I encourage ALL schools to offer medical terminology or HS 3 or dual enrollment in medical terminology/anatomy or virtual school medical terminology or HS 3 to their students. Science Department A&P, or AP Biology may be substituted and this does meet the pre-requisite for your student to take a clinical certification/course. However Science courses cannot count as a CATE credit. So this student would not be a completer until that Senior level CATE course/certification is completed.

To say it another way….. You have a student who has had, HS1, HS2, Science Department A&P, then they have met the pre-requisites to move to a senior level certification course including Nurse Aide. HOWEVER, A&P does not count as part of the completer units required. This student is not a completer, until they complete that senior level course. That would be their 3rd or 4th unit in their completer status.

These certifications are only for students in their senior year that have met the required pre-requisites Medical Coding and Billing Patient Care Technician Nurse Aide Pharmacy Technology EKG Medical Assisting Phlebotomy EMT EHR

Dual Enrollment Courses There are already a lot of DE courses with numbers assigned- see the list in the Student Reporting Guide These are mostly counted as elective credit and not as a completer course. Currently Statewide there are two DE courses approved to count in the Completer path. AHS 102 and AHS 104. There are districts who have others that are approved individually for their district. There is a process and paperwork requirements to go through to have a course counted in the completer pathway. Contact Angel if there is a course that your school/district would like to apply for.

PLEASE NOTE…… Health Science 3 and Medical Terminology can be flexible courses. If a student has taken Health Science 1, EMS 1, Sports Medicine 1 – They may take HS3 out of sequence (or before HS2, EMS 2, or SM2) if it works better in their schedule or the schools schedule or vision. HS3 and Med Term are the ONLY courses that can be taken out of sequence.

Other things that are noteworthy… Other things that are noteworthy…. Remember the standards are the minimum to be taught. You can add more material in as you see fit as long as you teach the minimum standards assigned to that course. If you work at a school that offers HS1 and HS2 for 2 units each…then you have ample to time to offer more material. For example you are tasked with incorporating Anatomy and Physiology, more clinical and patient skills as well as Medical Terminology in these classes so that students are prepared for the NCHSE Assessment.

Virtual School Offerings: Health Science 1 Medical Terminology Introduction to EMS Health Science 3

Textbooks and Curriculum meetings continued: We are in the process of adopting textbooks for Sports Medicine 3, Medical Billing and Coding, and Middle School Introduction to Health Professions. The textbook committee met on June 7th and will meet again in September to solidify their recommendations. Remember you can use your Perkins funding to order a classroom set to supplement what you are teaching.
