Plant Tissues

Meristematic Cells Unspecialized. Divide and differentiate into specialized tissues. These cells would be analogous to animal stem cells!

Dermal Tissue Forms outermost layer of a plant. Epidermis can be specialized: Epidermal root cells can form root hairs to absorb water and minerals. Epidermal leaf cells produce a waxy waterproof cuticle. Dermal tissue in a plant is like Epithelial tissue in an animal.

Vascular Tissue Xylem Phloem Transports water and dissolved minerals from the roots to the leaves. Phloem Transports a sugar solution from the leaves to the roots. Vascular tissue in a plant is like Connective (blood) tissue as well as Nervous tissue in an animal.

Ground Tissue Located between the dermal and vascular tissue. Perform a variety of functions: Photosynthesis. Food and water storage. Structural support. Ground tissue in a plant is like Connective (adipose and/or bone) tissue in an animal.

Plant Tissues Dermal tissue, Vascular tissue, and Ground tissue is found throughout the plant, in the roots, stems, and leaves (see colour-coded diagram on slide).
