Do Now What are the two main cell types? What are 3 differences between a prokaryotic cell and a eukaryotic cell? What organism is prokaryotic? What 4 structures or organelles do all cells have in common? DNA is found free-floating in which type of cell? True or False. The nucleus in a prokaryotic cell contains one circular chromosome.

Cell Structure MODULES 3 & 5 (Day 4 of 6) Plant vs Animal cells https://youtu.be/-zafJKbMPA8 (3 mins)

SWBAT visually identify organelles found in plant and animal cells explain that animal and plant cells are eukaryotic compare/contrast organelles found in plants and animals

Cell Theory 1. All organisms are made of cells. 2. Cells are the structural and functional units of organisms. 3. All cells come from pre-existing cells.

Graphic Organizer Circle and label ALL organelles for both plant and animal cells on your organizer. Write whether the organelles are found in either plant, animal, or both.

Prokaryotic Cells DNA Cell Membrane Ribosomes Cytoplasm Plasmid 1 of 11 Prokaryotic Cells DNA Cell Membrane Ribosomes Cytoplasm Plasmid

Eukaryotic Cells – have a nucleus with chromosomes made of DNA to REGULATE cell activities

The cytoplasm is the “filling” of the cell” (mostly water) Both animal AND plant cells have a cell membrane / plasma membrane to regulate TRANSPORT of materials 3 of 11 Cell Membrane The cytoplasm is the “filling” of the cell” (mostly water)

Ribosomes are the sites of protein SYNTHESIS

Mitochondria: Makes energy in the form of ATP- currency of the cell (activation energy needs ATP) Mitochondria

Vacuoles: stores water and waste 6 of 11 Vacuoles: stores water and waste Vacuoles

Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER): modifies proteins made by the ribosomes 6 of 11 Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER): modifies proteins made by the ribosomes Endoplasmic Reticulum

Golgi Complex: packaging center of the cell (UPS)

8 of 11 Lysosomes: contains digestive enzymes which are used to break down waste taken from the vacuole Lysosomes (not shown)

9 of 11 Centriole: a small set of microtubules that aid in an animal’s cell division centriole

10 of 11 Cell wall: provides a rigid structure for a plant cell; made of cellulose Cell wall

11 of 11 Chloroplast: the site where photosynthesis occurs; contains pigment protein chlorophyll Chloroplast

Group Activity (20 mins) I will group you with 1 partner. You will draw a bacteria, animal, or plant cell. One person is responsible for drawing all of the organelles inside your cell (on one sheet of paper) The other person is responsible for writing all organelles and their functions (on the other sheet of paper). Check to make sure your team has the same (and correct) organelles. Make it colorful so I can hang it in the hall!

Group Activity Part 2 (5 mins) If you have a prokaryotic cell, switch with a group that has a animal cell. If you have a animal cell, switch with a group that has a plant cell. If you have a plant cell, switch with a group that has a prokaryotic cell.

Independent Practice. In your travel journal, complete the chart. Bacterial Cell Animal Cell Plant Cell All Cells Cell Membrane Ribosome Cytoplasm Mitochondria Nucleus DNA Cell Wall Chloroplast Vacuole Golgi Complex Prokaryotic Eukaryotic

SWBAT visually identify organelles found in plant and animal cells explain that animal and plant cells are eukaryotic compare/contrast organelles found in plants and animals

Exit Ticket In which cell type is circular DNA found in? Which two organelles do only plant cells have? What 4 organelles or structures do all cells have? If centrioles are present, is it an animal or plant cell? In which cell type could you find cytoplasm?
