Mr. Warman - Unit 1, Chapter 2, Lessons 1-3 11/14/2018 Growth of Trade 2.1 Do Now What inventions do you think could have improved trade in the early 1400’s ?

Advances that paved the way for European exploration: Ships: carrack (Santa Maria) and caravels (Nina, Pinta) Maps: updated maps prior to Columbus Tools: compass, astrolabe, quadrant October 12, 1492 – Columbus sailed the ocean blue. He believed he had sailed to India (East Indies), but he was in Bahamas (West Indies). He was then made Admiral of the Ocean Sea by Spain and they agreed to fund his future voyages. He promised to bring Christianity to lands he found and discover a new trade route for Spain. 3 more voyages - Hispaniola, Cuba, and Jamaica. He mapped the coastline of Central America.

Vasco Nunez de Balboa (1513) Amerigo Vespucci (1502) Sailed South America’s Coast; discovered South America was not part of Asia; people called the land “America” in his honor Vasco Nunez de Balboa (1513) discovered vast body of water (later called Pacific Ocean) and claimed the lands along it as Spain’s Ferdinand Magellan (1520) Named the pacific ocean “Pacific” because it was calm; 1st ship to circumnavigate the world
