Pre-Battle Information The Royal Navy (England) at the time, was the top naval power in the world. German Navy was catching up in terms of both quantity and quality. British Grand Fleet -- main Royal Navy fleet during WWI -- hoped to destroy the German High Seas Fleet in battle. Both sides were reluctant to commit because Germany had little chance of winning and England had little to gain from a victory and everything to lose by a defeat.

Beginnings of the War Why did it start? The Battle of Jutland occurred as a response against the British blockade on the Germans. Commander Admiral Reinhard von Scheer lead the Germans to battle against the blockade. On the opposite side, the English were lead by Admiral Sir John Jellicoe.

German Plan Important People: Vice-Admiral Reinhard Scheer (Fleet Leader) Vice-Admiral Franz Hipper (Scouting and Luring) Overall, the British had a much larger navy than the German fleet, and the Germans were well aware of this. As a result, the German plan was to lure parts of the British naval fleet out and trap them with ships and submarines. Unfortunately, this plan was intercepted by the British

British Plan Important People: Admiral Sir John Jellicoe (Northern Fleet) Vice-Admiral Sir David Beatty's (Southern Fleet) British intelligence officers of Room 40 intercepted the German plans and placed their battleships to try to trap the German fleet as well as cutting off the atlantic sea from the Germans. This was also a British response against the Germans attacking supply ships.

Battle
