If you need to leave the table during a meal, say “Please excuse me for a moment” and leave your napkin on your chair. If something gets stuck in your teeth, excuse yourself and head to the bathroom. If you can’t reach something, ask someone to pass it. Say thank you at the end of the meal, then ask to be excused from the table – leave your napkin to the left of your plate. Say, “No thank you. I don’t care for any. Quietly remove it from your mouth with your thumb and finger, then set it to one side of your plate. Try not to jump up and scream. Say, “May I please have another salad?”
