Etiquette and Manners for today Dude, That’s Rude! Etiquette and Manners for today

The Goops The Goops they lick their fingers And the Goops they like the knives; They spill their broth on the tablecloth – Oh, they lead disgusting lives! The Goops the talk while eating, And Loud and fast they chew; And that is why I’m glad that I Am not a Goop – are you? By Gelett Burgess

Top Ten Table Manners Arrive at the table neat and clean – hands washed, hat off – hoods count as hats! Put your napkin on you lap as soon as you sit down. No elbows on the table. Wait to start eating until everyone has been served. Small bites and chew with your mouth closed. Swallow before you speak. Don’t chat on the phone, text your friends, or use headphones at the table.

If you need to leave the table during a meal, say “Please excuse me for a moment” and leave your napkin on your chair. If something gets stuck in your teeth, excuse yourself and head to the bathroom. If you can’t reach something, ask someone to pass it. Say thank you at the end of the meal, then ask to be excused from the table – leave your napkin to the left of your plate. Help clear the table without having to be asked.

Simply put, eat like a person, not a pig!

More Manners: Offer serving plates to other people at the table before you serve yourself. Pass serving dishes to the right. When eating salad, cut it into bite-sized pieces – don’t smoosh giant lettuce leaves into your mouth! When cutting meat, cut one bite at a time – not all at once!

How to Eat a Roll: Just butter and bite, right? Not quite: Put a dab of butter on your plate (or your bread plate if you have one.) Break off a piece of the roll. Butter only that piece. Eat. Repeat.

The Place-Setting Puzzle: It’s a special occasion and you’ve been invited to a fancy restaurant. Your all dressed up and the hostess takes you to your table, you put your napkin on your lap and eek! What are you supposed to do with all those plates, glasses and utensils? Your water glass is the one on the right, just above your knife. You bread plate is the one on the left. Use utensils for the outside-in. Start with the spoon on your far right – this is usually the soup spoon. Start with the fork on your far left – this is your salad fork. ( A salad fork is smaller than a dinner fork. A soup spoon is bigger than a teaspoon.) When in doubt, watch what other people do.

What is a cover? A cover is one place setting for one person and includes the following: MAKE sure to draw this diagram it is on the final exam.

What would you do? Someone serve you noodles with peanut sauce, you are allergic to peanuts. Someone asks you if you’d like something you already know you don’t like. You eat a bite of something and it is really yucky. You find a bug, hair, or something disgusting in your salad. Say, “This looks delicious, but unfortunately, I’m allergic to peanuts. Say, “No thank you. I don’t care for any. Quietly remove it from your mouth with your thumb and finger, then set it to one side of your plate. Try not to jump up and scream. Say, “May I please have another salad?”

Tipping: You and your date are at a fine dining establishment and you need to figure out if you should leave a tip and how much you should leave for a tip. What do you do? Tips are a way of showing appreciation for your server –most servers make the bulk of their income from their tips, so they tend to give good service. The standard tip is 15%. If you can’t figure this in your head, most cellphones now have a tip figuring feature in the phone.

Scenarios Get into groups of 2-3 and discuss the 16 scenarios. Write answer on a sheet a paper with all your names on the top.
