Systems Engineering Tool for Intelligent Transportation SET-IT Tool Training June 2017 SET-IT Tool Training Systems Engineering Tool for Intelligent Transportation Introduction Module 1 This training is designed for transportation professionals that want to understand how to use SET-IT tool to create and maintain project architectures. The training discusses how to use SET-IT Tool and provides a basic overview of the tools that have been developed to support ARC-IT use.

SET-IT Tool Training June 2017 Course Modules Module 1 – Background to SET-IT Training Module 2 – SET-IT Tool Introduction Module 3 – SET-IT Tool Walk-Through Module 4 – SET-IT Tool Walk-Through, continued Module 5 – Developing a Basic Project using SET-IT Module 6 – SET-IT Additional Topics Module 4 continues the walkthrough of the SET-IT Tool, It will take approximately 2½ hours to complete the entire course.

ARC-IT and the Toolset Training SET-IT Tool Training June 2017 ARC-IT and the Toolset Training http://www.arc-it.net/, click Resources & Training Introduction to ARC-IT – overview of the Architecture Reference for Cooperative & Intelligent Transportation (ARC-IT) The reference upon which SET-IT is based http://www.arc-it.net/ Introduction to RAD-IT – developing regional ITS architectures Introduction to SET-IT – this course The training page of the new ARC-IT website includes 3 online courses. Go to the ARC-IT website, click the Resources link and the Training page. This training course provides an introduction to the SET-IT tool. There is are 2 companion courses – the first introduces the Architecture Reference for Cooperative and Intelligent Transportation (ARC-IT). ARC-IT is the reference architecture upon which SET-IT is based. This course provides an overview of the website and how the architecture is organized. The 2nd companion course is an introduction to the Regional Architecture Development tool for Intelligent Transportation (RAD-IT). RAD-IT is a software tool to develop regional ITS architectures.

Course Outcomes Explain the background for SET-IT SET-IT Tool Training June 2017 Course Outcomes Explain the background for SET-IT Describe the requirements and prerequisites for using the SET-IT tool Identify key features of SET-IT Describe how to develop a basic project using the SET-IT tool Explain uses of the SET-IT tool in the connected vehicle environment Explain uses of the SET-IT tool in the connected vehicle environment.

This module will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. SET-IT Tool Training June 2017 Module Outcomes Explain ARC-IT concepts Describe the background needed to use the SET-IT tool Explain how the SET-IT tool relates to ARC-IT & RAD-IT The outcomes for Module 1, Background to SET-IT Training, are that you will be able to: Explain concepts of the reference architecture, ARC-IT; Describe the background needed to use the SET-IT tool; and Explain how the SET-IT tool relates to ARC-IT and RAD-IT. This module of the training will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. This module will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

We Need a Common Language SET-IT Tool Training June 2017 We Need a Common Language A reference architecture is needed in response to managing the complexity of intelligent transportation systems that now include connected and automated vehicles. ARC-IT models the intelligent transportation functions and communications on a number of levels To develop and deploy the intelligent transportation systems that will realize the desired objectives, we need to use a common language so that the supporting systems present consistent communications and services no matter where the mobile devices are located or what agency is deploying the system applications. This presents complexity not only within the technology domain but institutionally as well. ARC-IT facilitates a common language for ITS stakeholders to define, design, develop and deploy transportation system applications. It models the ITS functions and communications so we can all understand how the pieces fit together and what dependencies exist.

SET-IT Tool Training June 2017 Purpose of ARC-IT To provide a common framework for planning, defining, and integrating intelligent transportation systems Establish a Reference Architecture, known formerly as the National ITS Architecture Provide the basis for regional and local implementation Besides providing a common language, the purpose of ARC-IT is to establish a framework for ITS deployment. ARC-IT was developed by identifying ITS, including connected vehicle, needs and requirements, developing a multi-faceted architecture that addresses those needs, and using that architecture to prioritize candidate interfaces for standardization.

ARC-IT Views Used to capture stakeholders’ concerns SET-IT Tool Training June 2017 ARC-IT Views Used to capture stakeholders’ concerns Enterprises to carry out applications Functions to satisfy requirements Physical objects to implement that functionality Communications protocols necessary Focus of SET-IT ARC-IT development followed the ISO/IEC/IEEE standard 42010-2011 for Systems and Software Engineering – Architecture Description. This led to the definition of four views of ITS. An important view of ARC-IT is the enterprise view which defines how the applications are carried out. The functional view defines the functional foundation of the architecture that satisfies the connected vehicle requirements. The most familiar view of ARC-IT is the physical view which groups the functionality into physical objects that establish the interfaces for ITS. Finally, the communications view identifies the communication protocols needed to implement ITS. The SET-IT tool focuses on using both the enterprise, physical, and communications views to develop ITS project architectures.

ARC-IT Website www.arc-it.net SET-IT Tool Training June 2017 ARC-IT is available at www.arc-it.net. It is highly recommended that you become familiar with the ARC-IT content on the website before taking this SET-IT training.

SET-IT Tool Training June 2017 SET-IT Systems Engineering Tool for Intelligent Transportation (SET-IT) supports tailored project architecture development based on ARC-IT SET-IT focuses on the Physical, Communications, and Enterprise Views * in version 8.0, the Enterprise View does not specify which relationships and roles are required to support service packages or information flow triples ARC-IT addresses over 130 service packages in the areas of environmental, mobility, safety and support. Much like the Regional Architecture tool, RAD-IT, is used to tailor the National ITS Architecture or ARC-IT content, the SET-IT tool is used to tailor the ARC-IT content for project levels. The ARC-IT physical, communications, and enterprise view are central to tailoring and developing connected vehicle applications using the SET-IT tool.

SET-IT Tool Training June 2017 Quiz In order to maximize your use of SET-IT, it is essential to have a working knowledge of which of the following? Connected vehicle history ITS policy objectives ARC-IT content DOT rule-making D. DOT rule-making.

SET-IT Tool Training June 2017 Quiz Review In order to maximize your use of SET-IT, it is essential to have a working knowledge of which of the following? Connected vehicle history ITS policy objectives ARC-IT content DOT rule-making Although it may be useful to understand the history of connected vehicles as well as ITS policy objectives and rule-making, it is essential that you understand the ARC-IT reference architecture content in order to maximize your use of the SET-IT tool for project architectures. Take advantage of the ARC-IT training available from the same website as this training (www.arc-it.net).

Review Module Outcomes SET-IT Tool Training June 2017 Review Module Outcomes Explain ARC-IT concepts Describe the background needed to use the SET-IT tool Explain how the SET-IT tool relates to ARC-IT & RAD-IT Return to the training curriculum to select the next module. To close this window, select the "X" in the upper right hand corner of your screen. You should now have a basic understanding of the background needed to use the SET-IT tool. This background includes knowledge of the reference architecture, ARC-IT. The main takeaway for this module is realizing that SET-IT allows for customization or tailoring of the ARC-IT content for your ITS project deployments. Return to the training curriculum to select the next module. To close this window, select the "X" in the upper right hand corner of your screen.
