Male Reproductive System Chapter 12

Two functions of the male reproductive system 1. Produce sperm 2. Transfer sperm to the female body Two functions of the male reproductive system

The male hormone is called: Testosterone The male hormone is called:

What are the testes? The pair of glands that produce sperm Located in the scrotum What are the testes?

The function of the scrotum A pouch that protects the testes and keeps them at the right temperature to produce sperm The function of the scrotum

Definition and function of the penis Tubed shape organ that extends from the trunk of the body just above the testes Releases semen into the female Definition and function of the penis

A mixture of sperm and fluids that protect sperm and carry them through the tubes of the male Semen

A series of muscle contractions at the height of sexual arousal Ejaculation Fertilization A series of muscle contractions at the height of sexual arousal The joining of a male sperm and female egg

Fertilization can only result if ejaculation occurs during sexual intercourse

Cannot live in temperatures higher than the normal body temp of 98 Cannot live in temperatures higher than the normal body temp of 98.6 degrees The scrotum protects sperm by keeping the testes below normal body temp Tight clothing that holds testes too close to the body may interfere with sperm production Sperm Facts

Ejaculations that occur when sperm is released during sleep This is a normal function that relieves the build up of pressure as sperm are produced Nocturnal Emissions

Vas Deferens – tubes that take sperm from testes to the urethra Urethra – the passageway through which both semen and urine leave the male body Internal Organs

Care Instructions for Males Get regular checkups every 12 months Bathe regularly Wear protective equipment to shield organs during physical activity Perform self examinations Practice abstinence to avoid STI’s Care Instructions for Males

STI’S Chlamydia Gonorrhea Syphilis **Treated with meds Genital Herpes A virus that causes periodic blisters on the genitals NO CURE!!!! Can only treat symptoms STI’S

Separation of tissue that allows part of the intestine to push through the weak spot of the scrotum. Symptoms: lump in groin area, pain in groin, or intestinal blockage Surgery is needed to fix it Inguinal Hernia

Sterility The inability to produce sperm Can be caused by:*untreated STI’s *exposure to lead, pesticides, & dangerous amounts of radiation *Use of drugs (pot) *Sperm of poor quality Sterility

Testicular Cancer

A lump or swelling of the testicles, and pain or tenderness in the testicles, abdomen or groin Most common cancer in males 14-34 Self examinations should be done once a month Testicular Cancer
