Outline Intro w/thesis First body paragraph (first trait) Topic Sentence Analysis Textual Evidence Explanation of Evidence Anchor/transition Second body paragraph Third body paragraph Conclusion

Thesis Statement What is the purpose of a thesis statement? Assert a position or opinion about the character that has to be proven. Bad example: “The Misfit is wicked, intelligent, and calculating.” Better example: “Because The Misfit is wicked, intelligent, and calculating, he embodies the worst fears of the grandmother, a character who represents the opposite of these qualities.”

Questions to consider What are you trying to prove? Does your thesis communicate this? What traits will you use to support your thesis? For each trait your choose, how does it support your thesis? What evidence can you use to support your position?

Introduction Catchy intros: Catchy bit of detail about the character Question or statement about the character Quote or short dialogue Philosophical overview Focus on what is important for your reader to know about the character Provide enough background information that your reader will know your character, but do not summarize the entire story
