Bell Work! Look at the chemical formulas below and identify the elements that make them up. Copper oxide Calcium bromide Aluminum sulfide Copper, Oxygen Calcium, Bromine Aluminum, Sulfur

COMPOUNDS! I know that all matter consists of atoms. Chapter 9 I know that all matter consists of atoms. I know that elements are made up of only one type of atom. I know some differences between an element and a compound. I know that the elements on the periodic table are categorized as metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.

What do salt, sugar, baking soda, and water all have in common? They are all made of atoms. They are all compounds. Elements are rarely found alone in nature. They are usually found combined with other elements making different compounds.

What exactly is a compound? Compound—a pure substance composed of 2 or more elements that are chemically combined So…elements and compounds are both pure substances.

Properties of Compounds Each compound has its own physical properties…such as…density, odor, color, or melting point. Compounds can be identified by their chemical properties…reaction with acid. Example: Calcium carbonate (found in chalk) It reacts with acid (vinegar). Example: Hydrogen peroxide It reacts when exposed to light.

Compounds vs. Element A compound has properties that differ from those of the elements that form it.

Can elements be broken down into simpler substances? Think about this… Can elements be broken down into simpler substances? NO Can compounds be broken down into simpler substances? Yes

The only way to break down a compound is through a chemical change. Compounds… Compounds can be broken down into their original elements…or simpler compounds…by chemical changes. The only way to break down a compound is through a chemical change.

Familiar Compounds Compound Elements Combined Table Salt Sodium and Chlorine Water Hydrogen and Oxygen Vinegar Hydrogen, Carbon, and Oxygen Carbon dioxide Carbon and Oxygen Baking Soda Sodium, Hydrogen, Carbon, and Oxygen

Let’s Sum it Up… I know that compounds are commonly found in nature. I know that a compound is a pure substance. I know that a compound is made up of 2 or more elements… which make molecules. I know that compounds can only be broken down by chemical changes.

Count the number of upper case letters in the chemical formula. How can you tell the difference between an element and a compound…on paper? Hydrogen H Oxygen O H2O Count the number of upper case letters in the chemical formula. Water is a compound because it is made up of 2 elements.

How many elements are in each of the following chemical formulas? 2 NaCl 3 CaCO3 H2SO4 3 Ne 1

During an experiment, how could you tell if a new compound has been formed? There would be signs of a CHEMICAL CHANGE taking place… Production of heat Production of light Fizzing or Foaming Smoke present Odor change Sound Color change
