WCPSS Vision of MTSS A systemic multi-tiered instructional framework that guides instruction and intervention that is matched to student need.
Team Initiated Problem Solving (TIPS) Are students responding to intervention? Did they meet the established target goal? Is their ROI acceptable? Has their ROI fallen below expectations more than 3 times? What do we need to adjust? Frequency Duration Intensity Group Size Does the focus match the data? PLT may refer student to Tier III after at least one adjustment to instruction. What patterns/trends does the data demonstrate? Does this data align with other data that we have for these students? What additional data do we need? Who are others needed to collaborate at PLTs? Why is the problem occurring? Instruction Curriculum Environment Learner Who will provide interventions? What is the frequency & duration? What materials are needed? Set short term & long term goals. Develop progress monitoring plan. Review at monthly collaboration. What data is there to support interventions/ strategies that were previously used? What do we need to learn as a PLT in order to better meet the needs of our students? What instructional model will meet the students’ needs?
Core: Tier 1 Who: All students are in Tier 1 (Core) What: Evidence-based programs and practices demonstrated to produce good outcomes for the majority of students Effectiveness: If at least 80% of all students are meeting benchmarks in Core alone. What about subgroups?
Supplemental Instruction: Tier II Who: Students needing supplemental support in addition to Foundational Core instruction (approx. 20% of students) What: Evidence-based programs and practices demonstrated to improve performance in Foundational Core Effectiveness: If at least 70-80% of students improve performance (toward Core standards) Slide adapted from G. Batsche
Intensive Instruction: Tier III Who: Students needing Intensive support in addition to Core instruction (approx. 5% of students) What: Evidence-based programs and practices demonstrated to improve performance Effectiveness: If there is progress toward performance in Core standards Slide adapted from G. Batsche
MTSS & PEP In Wake County Public Schools, a PEP is an intervention/instructional plan that addresses the student’s needs in order to prevent failure that leads to not being promoted or graduating.
