Essence of Agile Eliminate Waste
Essence of Agile Eliminate Waste “Waste is a crime” – Taiicho Ohno Waste through unreasonable expectations – Have reasonable goals, don’t constantly force employees to have to perform heroic acts to succeed, be realistic about what can be achieved. Waste through inconsistency – ensure you have a steady flow of work, can your team switch tasks, remove impediments quickly. Waste through outcomes – are systems in place that produce nothing of value ? Are processes superfluous, or result in wasted time ?
Essence of Agile Eliminate Waste Common agile practices to help eliminate waste Prioritise – do one thing at a time. Complete one thing before starting the next thing. Get it right first time – or “A stitch in time saves nine”.
Essence of Agile Eliminate Waste Agile coaches Helps the team recognise for themselves wasteful practices. Works with Team Leads to help recognise issues with individuals and develop coaching techniques that address that individual’s idiosyncrasies .
Essence of Agile Manage Risk How do we bring projects in on time and on budget ? Planning is great is makes us feel like we are in control.
Essence of Agile Manage Risk “No plan survives contact with the enemy” Plan, but be prepared to change those plans. Helmuth von Moltke the Elder (1800 – 1891)
Essence of Agile Manage Risk Measuring Progress Things change – accepting that change is inevitable is key to understanding how to manage risk. Progress can and should be monitored, by monitoring progress we can understand when there is a risk to the project and allow us to deal with the risk. The key to monitoring progress is to split big tasks into smaller tasks.
Essence of Agile Manage Risk User Stories and user Vignettes Describe stories using terms that everyone can understand. Ensure your stories describe something of value. Get your team to realise that the story has to be small enough to complete in a day. Measure progress and manage risk daily by assessing which stories were complete.
