Using Argumentation and Explanation to Develop Content Knowledge

Let’s Talk… Use a wireless electronic device (smartphone, iPad) to access the following website: http://todaysmeet.com/SEPs Enter a name and “join” the conversation.

Teaching content is not enough Science content will be linked to the Science and Engineering Practices. Too often content has been taught in isolation or is fragmented. Performance indicators describe outcomes – what students should be able to do to demonstrate knowledge and understanding. Science is a body of knowledge and the process by which that knowledge was obtained. You can’t learn science content without doing the process of science.

Today’s Agenda Claim, Evidence, Explanation Formative Assessment “Inquiry and Scientific Explanations: Helping Students Use Evidence and Reasoning” (Jigsaw) Creating Learning Experiences (Using Argumentation and Explanation) (Grade level/Content Groups) “Turning The Science Classroom Into a Courtroom: Engaging in Argument from Evidence” (Strategy)
