Building Community through Inclusive Excellence Diversity & Inclusion at UCONN Building Community through Inclusive Excellence

Our Work: Representation & Access DIMENSIONS OF DIVERSITY Modeled after the Dimensions of Diversity Wheel, developed by Marilyn Loden* *Loden, M. (1996). Implementing Diversity, Burr Ridge, IL: Mc-Graw Hill Publishing. *Loden, M. (1996). Implementing Diversity, Burr Ridge, IL: Mc-Graw Hill Publishing.

Our Work: Representation & Access BARRIERS TO ACCESS Remember equitable is different from equal. Equal suggests the same treatment or support. Equitable suggests the need to provide different treatment or support to make equal access possible. This slide demonstrates this distinction well.

Diversity & Inclusion at UCONN “In our culturally and intellectually diverse community…. We appreciate differences in one another as well as similarities, We aspire to be an increasingly inclusive educational institution that attracts, retains, and values talented people from all backgrounds. We believe in diversity in intellectual approach and outlook. We embrace diversity not as a keyword for token inclusion of the underrepresented, but as a commitment to fostering a welcoming environment in which all individuals can achieve their fullest potential and in which open and respectful communication is facilitated.” Source: UCONN Academic Plan, Core Value: Diversity 5

What Is Inclusive Excellence? Inclusive Excellence means putting our community values into action and creating a campus climate where all members thrive and succeed.

What Are We Doing? Challenging trainers to examine and explore their personal and institutional experiences with inclusion as a foundation for facilitating workshops Introducing, exploring, and discussing challenging diversity and inclusion topics with new students through active participation using experiential methods.

An Inclusive UCONNNATION Understands and values inclusion Acknowledges its own biases Understands the university, its customers (the world!) and their changing needs Acts as role models – leads the way Builds and leverages a diverse team Demonstrates cultural competence – continuous learning
