The Industrial Revolution and the Agricultural Revolution Pt 1

To-Do Complete table of key ideas and concepts from pages 14-15. Major Idea (Name and brief description). People and Events that helped develop them.

The Industrial Revolution Discuss reasons for the statement in the Textbook on page 21 ‘Before the Industrial Revolution, 80 per cent of the population lived in the countryside and only 20 per cent in cities … By 1850, 80 per cent of people in Britain were living in a major city or town.’ Hint: Use pages 20-21 as a guide.

The Agricultural Revolution The Agricultural Revolution included the reallocation of land ownership to make farms more compact and an increased investment in technical improvements, such as new machinery, better drainage etc. The agricultural revolution was an essential prelude to the Industrial Revolution.

To-Do Create a poster which either supports or rejects the idea of enclosure (i.e. Removing small tenants from their land and creating large farms). Use information from pages 22-23 to support your poster. Create a small brief in your textbook to explain what your poster is trying to convey to the audience. Enclosures: The act of legally seizing public land by putting a barrier around it – aiming to improve farming techniques and productivity.

To-Do Complete Review 1.1. – Page 19.

Now to Vote! After presenting posters and arguments, hold a vote for whether enclosure should proceed or should be abolished.

The Key to Change? Compare Source 1.6 (Textbook p. 20) and Source 1.9 (Textbook p. 21). Create a table comparing continuities and changes between the two sources.

Review Questions Describe three features of agriculture before the Agricultural Revolution. How did agricultural machinery change farm labor? Describe the inventions or methods of at least three agricultural innovators. Weigh the pros and cons of modern agriculture’s use of pesticides, preservation, and stock breeding
