Carbon Footprinting
By the end of the session you should be able to… Understand what carbon footprinting is and why organisations and individuals do it Understand how to start calculating your own carbon footprint
What is included? Developed by Mike Berners-Lee for the WWF. http://footprint.wwf.org.uk/ Also check out Berners-Lee (2010) How Bad Are Bananas? The Carbon Footprint of Everything)
How do you carbon footprint something? Fuel Type Measurement Unit Emissions Factor kgCO2 / per measurement unit Electricity kWh 0.541 Natural Gas1 0.1836 In 2013/14 Joe Blogs used 4,750 kWh of electricity and 5,200 GWh of natural gas. Electricity = 4750 x 0.541 = 2,596.75 kg CO2 Gas = 5200 x 0.1836 = 954.72 kg CO2 Total = 2,596.75 + 954.72 = 3551.47 kg CO2 http://www.ukconversionfactorscarbonsmart.co.uk/
Try and calculate my footprint. Electricity: 1652 kWh @ 0.541 kg CO2/kWh = 1652 x 0.541 = 893.73 kg CO2 Natural Gas: 8445 kWh @ 0.1836 kg CO2/kWh = 8445 x 0.1836 = 1550.50 kg CO2 Total carbon footprint from energy consumption: =893.73 + 1550.50 =2444.23 kg CO2 =2.44 t CO2

My annual footprint is c 7. 87t CO2/yr My annual footprint is c 7.87t CO2/yr. Annual global comparison include (World Bank, 2009): UK – 10.17 tonnes United States – 17.7 tonnes China – 5.8 tonnes India – 1.4 tonnes
