Asexual Reproduction in Plants Headings Vocabulary Important Info

Offspring will have same genes as parents Vegetative Propagation: Producing new individuals from roots, stems, or leaves of existing plants Examples: Runners- modified stems that grow along the top of the ground & send out their own roots Strawberries

2. Rhizomes- modified stems that grow under the soil, produce new roots from stem. Ex- Grasses 3. Tubers- shorter, thicker stems that produce an “eye” which is capable of producing a new plant. Ex-Potato

4. Bulbs- Stem covered with modified leaves which can produce a new plant Ex: Onion 5. Food Storing Roots- Roots which are capable of producing a new plant Ex: carrots & beets

Artificial Propagation Method of Asexual reproduction most used in agriculture 1. Cuttings- pieces of stem cut from parent kept in water, moist soil or sand Will put out new roots. Ex:-Many garden plants

2. Grafting- Buds or sections are cut from one plant Attached to another that is already rooted in the soil. Ex- Roses, Fruit Trees 3. Tissue culture- pieces of the center of stem are removed placed in flasks with growth medium a whole new plant will develop

Photosynthesis in Plants Chlorophyll- green pigment in plants Converts light energy to chemical energy in the form of carbohydrates Sugars can be broken down to release ATP Photosynthesis- process where plants trap energy to build carbohydrates 6CO2 + 6H2O + sunlight energy  C6 H12 O6 + 6O2

CELLULAR RESPIRATION C6H12O6 + 6O2  6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy (ATP) Reversed Photosynthesis Equation Cellular respiration is what cells do to break up sugars into a food that the cell can use as energy. This happens in all forms of life. Cellular respiration takes in food and uses it to create: ATP chemical which the cell uses for energy. Some simple organisms can only go through anaerobic cellular respiration.

Quiz IN ____ Asexual reproduction In asexual reproduction, the offspring will have a mixture of genes from both parents. True/false. Strawberries are considered _____________, their stems will grow along the top of the ground and send out their own roots. A. rhizomes B. runners C. bulbs D. tubers During ____, buds are cut from one plant and attached to another A. bulbs B. runners C. cuttings D. grafting 4. The green pigment in plants A. chloroplasts B. chlorophyll C. yellow carotinoids D. blue-green chlorophyll 5. Photosynthesis takes place in what part of the plant? A. roots B. stems C. leaves D. rhizoids
