Photosynthesis *Photo=light synthesis= to make…Using light to make the plants food…Also helps us remember the two stages of photosynthesis photo=light reactions synthesis- calvin cycle that makes our end product

What you know. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make their food…Carbohydrates….Glucose. Photosynthesis takes light energy and converts it into biologically usable chemical energy stored in glucose by breaking apart and rearranging carbon dioxide and water.

Where does Photosynthesis happen? It takes place inside the CHLOROPLAST, with dozens of them found in the cells of each leaf Inner Membrane Outer Membrane Stroma Intermembrane Space -All green parts of the plant including leaves, stems, unripened fruit have chloroplast -Talk about it and then have students stop and draw on a folded computer paper. Thylakoids, Granum, Stroma -Chlorophyll pigment found in thylakoid membranes make green Thylakoid Granum

Law of Conservation of Energy Energy is not created or destroyed, only converted/transfered!!!

Light Energy Light is both a particle and a wave Each color is a different wavelength Shorter wavelength = more energy

-Light from the sun is really all colors of the rainbow…ROYGBIV

Colors and Pigments Pigments are molecules that can absorb some wavelengths and reflect others. Example: Chlorophyll Photosystems: Arrangement of chlorophyll & proteins used to collect/absorb the suns energy What color is it really? Explain color in your own words:

Law of Conservation of Matter Matter is not created or destroyed, only rearranged!!! How is this true in photosynthesis?

Living Things and Matter Plants and animals will do 3 things with their matter: 1) Rearrange it to build cell/body structures 2) Break it apart to release energy 3) Discard what they don’t use

What happens to the glucose? Glucose is: 1) Broken apart in the mitochondria and used to make lots of easy to use ATP energy or 2) Chained together to make the plants body 3) Eaten by other organism and used for their energy

Matter and Energy Matter can trap and transfer energy Examples in photosynthesis… Electron carriers Pigments

Factors Affecting Photosynthesis 1) Light Intensity in light = ____ in the rate of photosynthesis ***Warning:____________________ 2)Temperature – best between 0 C and 35 C If the temperature is too higher or too low, this changes the shape of the enzymes involved in photosynthesis. 3) Carbon Dioxide Levels in CO2 = ____ in the rate of photosynthesis
