The Process of Photosynthesis 11/14/2018 The Process of Photosynthesis Photo means light and synthesis means putting together

How Does Photosynthesis Help Us? 11/14/2018 How Does Photosynthesis Help Us? During photosynthesis oxygen is released into the air When we breath air, we take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide Plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen -From sunlight green plants combine carbon dixiode and water to make sugar and oxygen. -Green plants use sugar to make starch, fats and proteins.

How do Plants Produce Their Own Food? 11/14/2018 How do Plants Produce Their Own Food? Most plants can produce all their own food because they contain a pigment called chlorophyll Chlorophyll is a substance that makes the leaves of most plants green Green plants use chlorophyll to capture sunlight Then they use the energy from sunlight to make food.

What is Sunlight? Energy from the sun travels in the form of waves 11/14/2018 What is Sunlight? Energy from the sun travels in the form of waves Plants have several different pigments in order to capture and use the maximum amount of energy

11/14/2018 Why are plants GREEN? Chlorophyll absorbs only certain wavelengths of light If a plant does not contain a pigment to absorb a specific color, then that wavelength will be reflected by the plant and that is the color they will appear Which ones does it not absorb? Be sure to explain the presence of different pigments with different absorption spectra

The Chemistry of Photosynthesis 11/14/2018 The Chemistry of Photosynthesis CO2 + H2O + light Energy------> O2 + C6H12O6 Or, in common terms: REACTANTS: molecules of carbon dioxide react with molecules of water and light energy PRODUCTS: oxygen and a molecule of glucose (a sugar)

11/14/2018 Light & Dark Reactions The process of Photosynthesis consists of 2 major series of reactions Light Dependent reactions Light Independent reactions aka: the Calvin Cycle

Light Reactions Require light energy 11/14/2018 Light Reactions Require light energy Water is converted to oxygen (the hydrogen atoms are removed and the H (hydrogen) is added to the electron carrier NADP to make NADPH) ATP and NADPH (an electron carrier) are produced

Light Reactions Who: light energy and water 11/14/2018 Who: light energy and water What: light energy is used to convert water to oxygen and the energy released from breaking the bond is used to create ATP When: 1st stage of photosynthesis Where: in the thylakoid membrane of a chloroplast in PLANT cells Why: to make ATP and release oxygen

Dark (Calvin) Reactions 11/14/2018 Dark (Calvin) Reactions Do NOT require light energy carbon dioxide (CO2) is converted to glucose (C6H12O6) this cycle uses energy from light reactions (ATP & NADPH) so no light energy is required! For this reason this reaction is said to be light independent

Calvin Cycle Who: carbon dioxide, ATP and NADPH 11/14/2018 Calvin Cycle Who: carbon dioxide, ATP and NADPH What: the ATP energy made in the light reactions is used to combine the hydrogen in NADPH and the carbon and oxygen in carbon dioxide to make glucose (C6H12O6) When: 2nd stage of photosynthesis Where: in the stroma of the chloroplast Why: to make glucose!

How do Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration relate? 11/14/2018 How do Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration relate?
