 Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use the sun’s energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars.  Read “Energy” p. 327 – 329  Take.
 Thermal energy is the energy that is associated with the motion of the particles in a substance.  All matter is made up of atoms (particles) that move.

Unit 1: Energy

Bell Ringer How would you define energy? Agenda: -Bell Ringer -Plant Energy Notes -Finish Lab/Posters -Work on vocab words Bell Ringer How would you define energy? What are some sources of energy on Earth?

Can we create a system that balances photosynthesis and respiration? Driving Question Can we create a system that balances photosynthesis and respiration?

Energy is the capacity to do work. It can not be created or destroyed, but can be converted or transferred.

Kinetic is energy of motion including waves, electrons, and atoms Types of Energy: Kinetic vs Potential Kinetic is energy of motion including waves, electrons, and atoms Potential is energy of position including gravitational and chemical Chemical energy is a form of potential energy stored in the bonds of atoms Radiant energy – light, gamma rays, microwaves, radiowaves Thermal energy is transfer of energy (heat) from higher temperature to lower temperature substances.

Identify the types of energy

How do plants obtain energy? Plants convert radiant energy into chemical energy through photosynthesis 6 H2O + 6 CO2  C6H12O6 + 6 O2 Where does the oxygen the plants release originate from?

How do plants store energy? A pigment is a chemical substance that absorbs photon energy from light. Chlorophyll is the main pigment in plants that absorbs red and blue light (green light is reflected) When photons of red or blue light reach chlorophyll particular electrons become excited and move to a higher energy level for a fraction of a second and are quickly used in the production of glucose. Plants can only store small amounts of glucose so if there is rapid photosynthesis plants convert glucose into starch for storage. If not used they release heat as they go back to their ground state

-Biodiesel Research in computer lab Good Morning!! We will have day 1 of ACT practice this morning. Make sure to grab an ACT practice sheet from the front red stool!! Also make sure to get an ACT Tips and Tricks sheet on the brown roley chair upfront. Agenda: -ACT Practice -Seed Energy Notes -Biodiesel Research in computer lab

Energy in Seeds Thoughts: Why do plants store energy in seeds? What type of energy is it? How can you measure it?

Plants store chemical energy in seeds so there is enough energy available for early stages of growth after germination. A simple method for measuring the chemical energy content of a seed is to burn it and use the heat released to increase the temperature of water. Energy is measured in joules (J) It takes 4.2 J of energy to raise 1 ml of H2O 1ºC seed energy = temperature rise (ºC) x water volume (ml) x 4.2J mass of seed (grams)
