Rationale Targeting AMR in LMICs requires focusing on sustainable, relevant, appropriate and cost-effective interventions. WHO/FAO/OIE call for global measures. Resources and mechanisms at the international level remain inadequate, particularly in LMICs. Support areas of unmet need in LMICs may have great impact on AMR. Moving AMR research capacity-building projects in LMICs from the bottom to the top of the priority list would be a groundbreaking achievement. Multi-disciplinary research required to better understand the overuse/inappropriate use of AM in health, food production, processing, distribution, retail and consumption settings in LMICs. Add value to existing JPIAMR programmes to forge broader partnerships between disciplines as well as researchers, end users, policy makers, NGOs and the private sector in LMICs. Collective action by including many funders increases robustness of a call

Interest so far TC Jan 2018 with The Canadian Institute for Health Research, IDRC, the Public Health Agency of Canada, The Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development, The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, MRC UK, VR, Sida Positive for in cash or in kind contribution for a future call- Sida 2 M Euro/year x 3-4 y IDRC funding level 3-5 MUSD depending on call and timing VR after 2020 when actual commitment finalyzes UK not before 2019

Possibilities A Call that targets partnerships between JPIAMR members and LMICs, and South South collaboration One health multidisciplinary approaches, consider add value /complement ongoing activities (Fleming Fund, UK AMR in a global context etc) Specific LMIC topics could be included in the 2019 JPIAMR Call? /LMIC participation could be supported in all topics depending on the priorities of funding agencies? Sida and IDRC funding could be used for LMIC counterparts to researchers funded by other JPIAMR members. Invite other JPIAMR and non-JPIAMR members

Experience funding research in LICS Sida and IDRC ≥ 40 y experience supporting research in, by, and for and by LMICs. Rigorous processes in place to ensure that grantees use funds received for their intended purpose and produce desired technical and ultimately development. Evidence that high-quality North-South (or multi-country teams) collaborative research projects can be quite effective at generating locally useful and appropriate innovations and interventions.

Characteristics Early and in-depth engagement of relevant community or national policy-stakeholders in agriculture, health, rural development will aim to scale-up effective interventions.

Themes to be explored Research on AB usage patterns; health provider/farmer knowledge, attitudes and practices; water and waste management systems; behaviour and transit of AMR organisms in food systems, and other key elements of farming systems in LMICs Understanding the socio-economic and cultural factors that drive health provider/farmer behaviour and decision-making on antibiotic use. To identify meaningful solutions and incentives for behaviour change generating evidence-based interventions that contain and mitigate the transmission of resistant pathogens in high-risk settings.
