1. Simple (AKA Independent Clauses) Def: A sentence that has a single subject (S) or compound subject (CS) and/or a single verb (V) or compound verb (CV). FANBOYS used only to make CS’s or CV’s. My back aches My teeth and eyes hurt. My throat and nose feel sore and look red.

1. Simple Continued You can add direct objects, indirect objects, prepositional phrases, adverbs, and adjectives, and the sentence would still be simple. E.g. Stacey eats cookies. Every morning, Stacey voraciously eats chocolate chip cookies for breakfast.

2. Compound Def: When two simple sentences (two separate ideas) are joined Contains a Comma + FANBOYS conjunction OR a semicolon. Usually used for simple ideas. E.g. I usually don’t mind missing school, but this is not fun. I feel too sick to watch TV; I feel too sick to eat. FANBOYS=Coordinating conjunction

3. Complex Def: Contains one independent clause (simple sentence) and one or more dependent clauses (incomplete sentence). (At least TWO simple sentences) Contain ONLY an AAAWWUBBIS conjunction (subordinating) AAWWUBBIS: Although, After, As, While, When, Until, Before, Because, If, Since (There are more; if it’s not a FANBOYS, assume it’s subordinating.) Convey sophisticated, mature thoughts. Ex: When I get back to school, I’m actually going to appreciate it. I won’t even complain about math class even though I usually abhor it.

4. Compound-Complex Def: Contains a compound sentence and at least one dependent clause (3 simple sentences at least) Contains at least 1 FANBOYS and 1 AAAWWUBBIS conjunction Convey very complex thoughts. Ex: 1. Yes, I have a bad flu, and because I need to get well soon, I won’t think about school just yet.

Ex: I love pie, so I get fat in winter. Explanation: This is a compound sentence because it has two complete thoughts/independent clauses/simple sentences(“I love pie” and “I get fat in winter”) joined by a coordinating conjunction (“so”).
