Adolph Hitler’s Rise to Power By Evan Blackmon Kiley Kozloski Renique Henry Adolph Hitler’s Rise to Power

Early Life Adolph Hitler was born on April 20, 1889 in Braunau am Inn, Austria. Hitler spent most of his childhood in Linz, the capital of Upper Austria. He dreamed of becoming an artist but, failed to secure entry to the Academy of Fine Arts twice. In 1913 Hitler moved to Munich. When World War I broke out he immediately volunteered for the German army and joined the 16th Bavarian Reserve Infantry Regiment. He was wounded in October 1916, and was gassed two years later. During the war, he was continuously in the front line as a headquarters runner; his bravery in action was rewarded with the Iron Cross, Second Class, in December 1914, and the Iron Cross, First Class in August 1918, which was a rare decoration for a corporal. Hitler greeted the war with enthusiasm, as a relief from the frustration and aimlessness of civilian life.

Rise to Power Hitler took up political work in Munich in May-June 1919. In September, he joined the small German Workers' Party in Munich, and was put in charge of the party's propaganda in 1920. Hitler left the army to devote himself to improving his position within the group, which later that year was renamed the Nazi Party.

Rise to Power (cont) Munich became a gathering place for dissatisfied men against the republic, many of which joined the Nazi party. An important member of the party, Ernst Rhm, greatly guided Hitler in his rise to power. Rhm recruited the “strong arm” squads used by Hitler to protect party meetings, to attack socialists and communists, and to exploit violence for the impression of strength it gave.

Ernst R hm Helps Hitler The “strong arms” squads were formally organized under Rhm into a private party army in 1921. These squads gave protection which allowed the party to gain support and members. Hitler took full advantage of the group that was getting stronger because he wanted to change their socialist ideas.

Hitler’s Foreign Policy Aims When Hitler came to power, he wanted to dominate Europe by making Germany a powerful country. He wrote his ideas in a book called Mein Kampf which means ‘my struggle’. He wrote this book in prison in 1924. His main goals were: To destroy the Treaty of Versailles To unite all German speakers in one country To expand to Poland and Russia (east)

Hitler in Power Hitler came to power in 1933 using powerful speeches and threats of violence. With his charismatic personality and dynamic leadership, he attracted a devoted following. He believed that the perfect person was tall, had blonde hair, and blue eyes (Aryan). He almost succeeded in terminating the Jewish race, killing millions upon millions of them, as well as Crippled people, homosexuals, and Gypsies in the Holocaust.
