Given the severity of any sicknesses or diseases one can get on Everest, one should really reconsider how much worth there is in climbing the mountain. In “Dangers on Everest,” White states, “HAPE is not just your common cold. The common cold goes away, HAPE does not. The effects it has on your body stay with you just as long as your accomplishments do” (pg.10). In other words, mountain sicknesses, like HAPE, can leave metaphorical scars on a climber’s health; yes, he/she may have summited, but now the climber will pay the physical price, for life. Also, diseases contracted on the mountain can scar the climber’s mind. “Summit Fever doesn’t go away when the climber leaves the mountain. His ambition and determination to keep climber, no matter the cost, can psychologically destroy him” (White, pg. 11). Not only does the climber’s body suffer from permanent damage, but his mentality and thought processes can become clouded, as well.
