Course Planning Evening New Curriculum Information How to access information on Courses at SWC MyEd BC in the course planning process

Why a Curriculum Change? Living in a world of Constant Change A technology-rich world, where communication is instant and information is immediately accessible The way we interact with each other personally, socially, and at work has changed forever. Knowledge is growing and information is changing extremely quickly, creating new possibilities. This is the world our students are entering!

Key Components of the New Curriculum Essential learning, literacy and numeracy foundations, and core competencies are the base of our new curriculum. All three contribute to deeper learning. Teachers have more flexibility in what they are teaching and students have more space and time to develop their passions and interests.

Grade 8 and 9 (Exploratory Years-Some Changes) Introduction to the Core Competencies. Elementary schools are already introducing this language to our students (Self-Reflection) Introduction to Career 8 and 9-which will lead into the courses Career Life Education and then Career Life Connections (Capstone Projects) A health component has been introduced to grade 8 and 9 PE where topics such as healthy eating, mental health and sexual health will be explored

What are the Core Competencies? The Core Competencies are a set of intellectual, personal, social, and emotional skills and abilities that all students need to develop so that they can engage in deep, life-long learning.

Three Core Competencies Communication Thinking Personal and Social Students will reflect on these and need to self report them in grade 8 and 9. Students will do so through a platform called MyBlueprint, which we are currently introducing to students

BC’s New Curriculum The Key differences for students on the 2004 Grad Program and the New 2018 Grad Program are new curricular and new provincial assessments. Our current Grade 12 students are on the 2004 Grad Program All of our upcoming students in Grade 8-11 will follow the 2018 Grad Program Since we have delayed implementing the Senior Curriculum student who are currently in Grade 10 and 11 will have a mixture of both programs

Some Modest Changes… Allowing schools to adjust to the new curriculum and new provincial assessments the ministry has decided that: The New Numeracy assessment will be introduced in January 2018 The New Literacy assessment will be introduced in January 2020 The new Grade 10 curriculum will take effect in all B.C. schools July 1, 2018 The Grade 10 Curriculum will be finalized and available by April, 2018

Grade 11 and 12 Curriculum Will take effect in all B.C. Schools July, 2019 The grade 11 and 12 curriculum will be finalized and available by June 30, 2018 The finalized grades 11 and 12 curriculum will be available for teachers to explore and try out in 2018/19 Ministry is in constant discussions with education partners and post secondary institutions regarding further possible changes to the grad program.

Numeracy Assessment Students on the 2018 grad program (Our current grade 10 and 11 students) will have to write the numeracy assessment. There will be an implementation of this starting with a subset of students writing in January 2018. Students who do not write in January will also be given the opportunity to write this test in June or the subsequent school year.

Literacy Assessment Our current grade 11’s will not have to write the Literacy Assessment. For 2017/18 (our current Grade 12’s) and 2018/19 school years the Language Arts 12 group of provincial exams will run as scheduled and will be aligned with the current and outgoing curriculum

Graduation Requirements (2018) Two Career Education courses (8 credits total) (replaces Planning 10 and Graduation Transitions) Physical and Health Education 10 (4 credits) Science 10 (4 credits), and a Science 11 or 12 (4 credits) Social Studies 10 (4 credits), and a Social Studies 11 or 12 (4 credits) A Math 10 (4 credits), and a Math 11 or 12 (4 credits) A Language Arts 10, 11 & 12 (12 credits) An Arts Education 10, 11, or 12 and/or an Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies 10, 11, or 12 (4 credits) 80 credits in total to Graduate (Same as 2004)

What does this mean for our current Grade 10’s? Follow the 2018 Grad Program Requirements and take Planning 10 (will count for Career Education 10) Will write the Numeracy and Literacy Assessments before graduation

Grade 11 students will… Follow the 2018 Graduation Program requirements and take Planning 10-or would have already taken Planning 10 Will complete Grad Transitions instead of Career Life Connections as it won’t be offered at Churchill next year Write the Numeracy Assessment before graduation Write English 12 Provincial before graduation
