The Crucible Meet the Writer With The Crucible, Arthur Miller (1915–2005) drew a parallel between the Salem witch hunt and events closer to home: the 1950s “Red hunt” for Communists. Miller himself was called before Congress for having attended some Communist meetings years before. He spoke frankly about himself but refused to name other attendees.

The Crucible by Arthur Miller Salem, Massachusetts, 1692: Reverend Samuel Parris’s daughter Betty lies seemingly unconscious. The baffled doctor suggests “unnatural” causes. The night before, Parris spied Betty, his niece Abigail, and others dancing wildly in the woods. Mutterings of witchcraft become shouts of accusation. The witch hunt begins.
