Chapter 10 Production Planning

Bill of Materials A list of the materials and parts needed to make one product.

Part Print Analysis A analysis of working drawings to break down the specific features and dimensions on a drawing. Information about the finished shape and size of the part, the materials needed, and the tolerances is collected during the part print analysis.

Materials Handling Systems Moving and storing parts and materials. Many different and automated types of equipment are used. Conveyors Hoist Forklifts

Conveyors Are used to move materials, parts, and products from one place to another along a fixed path.

Hoist A hoist has one or more pulleys and is used to lift heavy loads. Example: Crane

Forklifts Often used to move pallets. They have forks on the front that can be raised and lowered.

Fixture A fixture clamps and holds the part in place during processing.

Jig Is like a fixture in that it holds the part but it also guides the tool.

Mold A mold is a hollow form. Liquid material is poured into the mold cavity As material hardens, it take the shape of the cavity.

Mold Example

Die A die is a piece of metal with a cutout or raised area having the desired finished shape. The material is then forced through or against the die to take its shape.

Die Punching Sheet metal and plastics are frequently cut to shape using a punch and die Coins are made this way.

Pilot Run A pilot run is like a practice game. All parts of the system are operated together before production really starts. The main purpose is to find and correct any problems in production.

Die Stamping The body of a car is shaped this way. The material is stretched over the die or the die is pushed into the material. Many times die stamping and die punching are done at the same time with the same machine.
