Presentation transcript:

Bellwork 5/12 Scientists are currently investigating whether there is a connection between increased extreme weather events and climate change. Why might these two things be linked? What kind of data might scientists be examining?

PSA After today, we have 4 full class periods together. Keep on top of your things! Still need to turn in a weather project? Do it now! 

Climate Change & Global Warming Both are happening

What’s the difference? Global Warming Climate Change Global warming refers to the rise in global average temperature Primarily a result of anthropogenic (human) actions Climate change is how the climate of different areas around the globe change over time Global warming is part of this… Natural process, but is “sped up” by global warming

“But Climate Change is NATURAL!!!” Yes, it is. The changing climate is not the alarming piece. The RATE at which the climate is changing is the cause of concern

Indicators of Climate Change: Temperature Sea Ice Extent Changes in biosphere Extreme weather events

Extreme Weather Events Droughts Floods Intense Rainfall Hurricanes Wildfires Tornadoes

Is there a connection between climate change and extreme weather? Yes? Maybe? Let’s look at the data… EPA NOAA NASA

Station Lab Spend about 5-10 minutes at each station analyzing the data TAKE GOOD NOTES! This will help you with your conclusion Goal: Make a claim regarding extreme weather events and climate change “There is a strong link” “Some events are closely linked, others are not” “There is no link”
