Go Confidently in the Direction… STUDENT PREREQUISITES: Student should know the keyboard well. Student needs to be able to follow instructions.

Do Not Fear the Office Ribbon Teach the longer method (Alt and using Tab) to navigate to features in the ribbons firs t. After students understand the long method, teach them about using keyboard sequences (i.e. Alt, H, then I).

Basic Navigation in PowerPoint Press F6 to move to different panes. The Slide Area is where you will be working most of the time. Press TAB in the Slide Area to move to different placeholders. To type in a text Placeholder, press ENTER. When finished typing, press escape once to go back to Object Level or twice if you want to move to another slide. To move to different Placeholders (text boxes, images, titles, etc.), move to Object level. To move to different slides, press the UP or DOWN arrow

Time to Add a Slide Press ALT, H, then I to open the New Slide Title Grid. Grid is arranged in three rows and three columns. Use arrow keys to hear choices and press ENTER to pick one.

Adding Pictures: I Get By with a Little Help From My Friends Nothing wrong with asking for help. Student can make a descriptive list about what kind of photos they want. A friend can save them with descriptive names and the student can insert them into the presentation independently.

How to Add a Picture Tab to Object Placeholder where you want to add picture. To insert a picture, press ALT, N, then P. Will open Insert Picture dialog. SHIFT TAB back to tree view and arrow to location. Press ENTER to confirm. Tab to list box and choose picture. Press ENTER on the picture you want to add.

FORMATTING THE BACKGROUND Add a Splash of Color FORMATTING THE BACKGROUND In the Slide Area, press ESCAPE until no object is selected. Press the APPLICATION key and arrow to FORMAT BACKGROUND. Choose FILL and TAB to Fill radio buttons to make choice. Tab to Color button drop down grid and press ALT DOWN arrow. Use arrows to choose color and press ENTER. Tab to APPLY TO ALL and ENTER.

Time for Bells and Whistles ADDING SOUND EFFECTS Press ALT, K, then U to move to Sound Effects combo box. Arrow to the sound effect you wish to use and press ENTER. To use the same effect for every slide, press ALT, K, then L to APPLY TO ALL. ADDING TRANSITION EFFECTS Press ALT, K, then T to move to the Transitions grid. There are seven rows and nine columns of different types of slide transition effects. Arrow to the effect you wish to use and press ENTER. To use the same effect for every slide, press ALT, L, then K to APPLY TO ALL.

Ready to Rock Press F5 to start your slideshow. Press the spacebar to move to the next slide. Press PAGEUP to go back one slide. Press PAGEDOWN to jump to the next slide. Press ESCAPE to exit presentation.

Don’t worry. I’ll remember everything Require your students to take notes. Don’t create a notes file for them. Taking notes actively engages students in learning as they must listen, and write down what they hear or interpret. Taking notes helps students understand what they are learning and helps them remember information more easily.
