Presentation transcript:

Why is Abraham important to Jews? Give out post it note to students, this is the plenary and then the start of next lesson, -Do you think Abraham benefits from the covenant? How and why? -Why do you think God wanted to make this covenant with Abraham and why did he test Abraham? -How do you think it might feel to be part of this covenant with God? -How do you think the covenant might affect Jews today both in terms of the way they feel inside and their practice outside?

He spoke to God and made a covenant with Him promising to worship and obey Him. In return, God promised to make Abraham and his family his Chosen People. Do you think Abraham benefits from the covenant? How and why? -Why do you think God wanted to make this covenant with Abraham and why did he test Abraham? -How do you think it might feel to be part of this covenant with God? -How do you think the covenant might affect Jews today both in terms of the way they feel inside and their practice outside? Final question: -How might a Jew show this mark of the covenant today? Explain that every Jewish boy at 8 days old is entered into the covenant, this allows every child to have Shekhinah (protection from God) just like Abraham did so long as each male is circumcised. Note: Please make sure that students understand what circumcision is, it is vital that students understand that it is not cutting off of the whole penis, rather just the foreskin!

Brit Milah Learning Objective: To evaluate the importance of the Brit Milah ceremony I can give reasons for and against performing a Brit, I can explain what a brit Milah is, I can give a reasoned opinion showing whether I agree or disagree with the Brit Milah ceremony,

Brit Milah Final question: -How might a Jew show this mark of the covenant today? Explain that every Jewish boy at 8 days old is entered into the covenant, this allows every child to have Shekhinah (protection from God) just like Abraham did so long as each male is circumcised. Note: Please make sure that students understand what circumcision is, it is vital that students understand that it is not cutting off of the whole penis, rather just the foreskin! Read through ‘Life a Journey’ and use the pictures above to help students understand what a Brit is, It is imperative that you focus the students on the Jewish belief that Jews do this to remain linked to God, and to be part of God’s protection.

Meet Hannah and Daniel… They have had a little boy, and are preparing for his Brit Milah Introduce students to the fictional characters of Daniel and Hannah, they are a couple who are unsure of whether or not to circumcise their son. It is going to be the classes job to help them come to a decision. This can be done a couple of ways… Using the QR codes students need to collect arguments to help Hannah and Daniel to make their decision, OR Use the sheets with the arguments written on them and students to use these to help Hannah and Daniel to make their decision.

What will Hannah and Daniel do? Use the information to help Hannah and Daniel decide on whether to go ahead with the Brit Milah, Hannah is unsure whether or not to go ahead with the Brit Milah, Daniel believes that is the best action to take. What will they decide? Use the stations around the room to see the help and advice that they have been given, Task: Write a summary of these opinions and facts around the room into your books, REMEMBER, a summary is not the whole thing- imagine you had to tweet it, keep it short and to the point!

Will you be attending? Explain to students that they need to write a response back to Hannah and Daniel, Students then need to use the information they have to write a persuasive response to David and Hannah’s Facebook group stating whether they will be going to the Brit Milah or not and say why…   Students can write a quick persuasive response on a post it note and stick it on the board.

Will you be attending? Students need to vote with their feet and move to the decision line or use post its if you would rather for students to show their decision on whether they will be attending the Brit Milah, Students then need to give reasons as to why they have moved to where they have moved
