Who was William morris? William Morris was born on the 24th March 1834. He came from a very large family and had nine siblings! (Brothers and Sisters) William Morris was a poet, artist, craftsman, designer and a printer. He is considered one of the great Victorians and he has been called the greatest English designer of the 19th Century.

Who was William morris? When William Morris was just nineteen years old he visited the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, London. He was not impressed by the exhibits of machines and factories that were mass producing furniture and other items for people’s houses. He wanted to keep alive traditional crafts such as furniture-making and pottery that were made by skilled crafts people. He wanted everyone to have the opportunity to have beautiful things in their homes. Having studied architecture at Oxford University, he set up his own company to make beautiful things for the home. This was known as the decorative arts. Morris believed that craftsmen who made beautiful things were just as important as artists. This was the beginning of the Arts and Crafts Movement in Europe and North America ‘Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.’

Decorative Art & Fine Art Fine art are paintings, drawings, photography and sculpture that is produced purely to look at and appreciate. Decorative art is about the design and manufacture of beautiful objects that also are functional. Architecture Ceramics (pottery) Fashion Textiles and fabrics Interior Design Printing

He designed wallpaper and textile patterns

He also designed stained glass windows

He was also a calligrapher. Calligraphy is the ‘art of writing’. William Morris designed many illuminated letters and manuscripts. This is when letters or texts are beautifully decorated.

Land of hope & glory William Morris was patriotic and very proud to be British. Many of his designs feature the colours of the Union Flag.

William Morris designed beautiful things for people’s homes – he was the like the of the Victorian age William Morris
