TOPIC SENTENCES

City v Country For the purposes of this example, we’re going to focus on country areas.

What is my task?? I want to write an essay about the distribution of Australia’s population. My first paragraph will specifically focus on the population in country areas.

Step One I need to gather information to base my paragraph on.

What is the topic of this paragraph? Country Australia 32% of the Australian population live in the country. Two thirds of Australians live in major cities. Over the past decade, the population in country Australia has been declining. What is the topic of this paragraph?

Step Two Now I have all my details and details, I need to write a topic sentence that matches those details.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE TOPIC: 32% of the Australian population live in the country. Two thirds of Australians live in major cities. Over the past decade, the population in country Australia has been declining. Topic sentences 1. If you are an Australian citizen, then you are far more likely to live in a city than a country area. 2. Even though life in the country can be peaceful, the number of Australians choosing to live in regional areas is declining. 3. Since the census was taken in 1996, the percentage of Australians living in country areas has continued to decline. 4. When the ABS conducted a census in 2011, it became clear that most Australian’s prefer a city lifestyle. What do you notice about my topic sentences?
