TheRadicalAgeMovement “THE DANCE OF MARGINALITY: HOW AGEISM ROBS US OF OUR DIGNITY.”

Part I

Older adults have a more difficult time finding gainful employment. Older adults have a more difficult time finding gainful employment. They are seen as technology-averse, unwilling to learn new skills, difficult to manage (particularly by younger supervisors), too expensive, and not productive enough to justify the perceived increased expense (The New York Times, 2009).

Older adults more frequently have their health concerns dismissed by healthcare professionals It's easier to say, "You're doing fine for your age, then to actually go over your test results. How many times have you taken a parent to the doctor and find the doctor talking to you instead of your mom or dad who is the patient. Please speak to my mom, she understands you and she's the patient; not me.

The media typically portrays older adults with negative stereotypes. After ageism in the work place, the next obvious place to find age prejudice is in the media. "Seen enough old bags?" This may seem like a harmless pun, but the message it is sending out to old and young alike reinforces negative stereotypes.

and, when and if aging is depicted from a positive point of view, the depiction is typically unrealistic and unattainable

Older adults running for public office are routinely questioned about whether they have “what it takes”. (York, 2014).

Peer pressure and the media encourage us not to show our age.

Do not let them know you’re old. At Radical Age we encourage our members to please "say their age." Nobody even knows what a 70 or 80 year old looks like.

Aging is Not a Disease to be Cured Dr. Oz in the top corner is the biggest snake oil saleman of all.

Beauty and wisdom are more than skin deep

Part II

Everyone at every age values their autonomy.

…and nobody wants to be treated like a child.

Nobody Can Survive Without Help

IN AN INTERDEPENDENT SOCIETY…

Do you know what the #1 root cause leading to death is for the elderly?

We all need love at any age.

You don’t have to be young to succeed.

Everyone should be able to live a full life, whatever that means for them.

TheRadicalAgeMovement is a national grassroots effort that challenges traditional notions of ageing . We are building an inter-generational movement dedicated to confronting and eradicating age discrimination and its impact on older adults in all areas of cultural, professional, and community life. www.radicalagemovement.org
