College Application Process It’s easy as …. 1. Complete college application(s) 2. Send Transcripts through Parchment 3. Send SAT Scores

Step 1. Apply to college 1. Log onto college website. Examples: schoolcraft.edu, msu.edu, cmich.edu 2. Click Apply Now 3. Complete online application- answer ALL questions! 4. Pay Application fee

Fee Waiver for Free/Red. Lunch

When to Apply for college By November 1 You are responsible for sending your transcript (Parchment.com) and your SAT scores (collegeboard.com). See handout for further details.

Teacher & Counselor Recommendations Ask for recommendations several weeks before the deadline Ask teachers in classes where you’ve been most active/interested Get recommendations from employers, organizations, etc Resumes listing YOUR honors, awards and accomplishments need to be provided to the person recommending you. All Common Applications require a letter of recommendation from your Counselor. Most schools do not require recommendations.

Step 2: Send Transcripts Follow the steps outlined in the handout provided to send your transcripts to college(s) you apply to Parchment.com

Tips for Parchment Make sure you spell your first and last name correctly (no nicknames) There is no fee to send transcripts Please see Guidance Secretary if a fee is requested. She can send them FREE of charge.

Step 3: Send SAT Scores

You must complete all 3 steps before colleges will review your application

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Available in October online at fafsa.gov You and your parent will complete the form on line using tax information from 2016. You list schools you have applied to on the form. The form determines your EFC (Expected Family Contribution) The EFC determines your eligibility for need and non-need based aid; grants, loans, etc. Each school on your FAFSA will send you an “Award letter” Do Form by 2/14 – declare your school 5/1 One of the first things you are going to want to do after finishing your applications for admission is start on the FAFSA form. This form becomes available in mid December and is recommended that it be filled out online. FAFSA is important because it is used by many schools to determine a student’s eligibility for need based federal and state aid. Once received, FAFSA is used to create a Student Aid Report and determine the Expected Family Contribution The Expected Family Contribution is just like it sounds. It is the amount of money that the government thinks your family should be able to pay for a year of your education. If you are curious what your EFC might be you can go online and use the FAFSA4caster to estimate the EFC.

Four Types of Financial Aid Grants Loans Gift funds Based upon financial need Can come from University or government funds Do NOT have to be repaid Funds which must be repaid, with interest Can be subsidized or unsubsidized Subsidized loans require financial need and unsubsidized do not Scholarships Work Study Gift funds Commonly based upon academic achievement or special talents Merit scholarships are usually based on high school GPA, class rank, & standardized test scores Do NOT have to be repaid Based upon financial need Students work part time for eligible employers Can earn wages up to the amount award for work study in the financial aid package Financial Aid packages include four categories of aid. All offered aid will fit into one of the categories to help you better understand your package. The package might have any combination of these four types of aid and can vary drastically by student.
