Elements and Compounds. What is an Element? An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down any farther without changing what it is All elements.
The Atom - Atoms react or not depending on its electron structure. - All atoms desire to have a full outer electron shell. - Metals will lose e - and nonmetals.

Classifying Chemical Substances PURE SUBSTANCES MIXTURES

Classifying Chemical Substances Pure substances are composed of only one type of particle. PURE SUBSTANCES ELEMENT Helium Balloon Helium Helium Helium The balloon only contains Helium atoms. Helium Helium Helium Helium Helium is known as an ELEMENT. Helium

Classifying Chemical Substances Pure substances are composed of only one type of particle. Cup of pure water PURE SUBSTANCES COMPOUND Water (H2O) contains 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. Water is a COMPOUND because elements combine together to form a new substance and cannot be separated back to atoms easily.

Classifying Chemical Substances Pure substances are composed of only one type of particle. PURE SUBSTANCES That one type of particle can be made up of either a single element (found on the periodic table), or a compound (more than one element COMBINED together). ELEMENT COMPOUND

Classifying Chemical Substances Mixtures are made up of at least two different PURE SUBSTANCES. Cup of Saltwater + Salt water contains salt (sodium chloride: NaCl) and water (H2O). MIXTURES => => Is sodium chloride itself an element or a compound? Since salt water contains salt (pure substance 1) and water (pure substance 2), it is a MIXTURE.

AIR CONTAINS MORE THAN 5 PURE SUBSTANCES. What’s in our Air? AIR CONTAINS MORE THAN 5 PURE SUBSTANCES.

Classifying Chemical Substances PURE SUBSTANCES ELEMENT COMPOUND Let’s develop our understanding of pure substances and mixtures! MIXTURES
