What is our goal? As an IB school, this learner profile is embedded into our school culture with the hope that CHS students will possess these attributes for life.

IB Curriculum Model

IB DIPLOMA PROGRAM: REQUIRED OVER TWO YEARS SIX TOTAL COURSES: **Minimum of three Higher Level (HL) Courses -HL courses cover a greater number of topics within the subject Two to three Standard Level (SL) Courses Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course Extended Essay (EE) Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) Students who do not pursue the full Diploma Program may still participate as an IB “Course Candidate” and take one or more IB courses of their choosing.

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) One of the core requirements of the IB Diploma Program (along with ToK and the EE) Provides an opportunity for students to serve their communities and reflect on WHY they did it: meaningful connections IB CAS is organized around three strands: Creativity- exploring and extending ideas leading to an original or interpretive product or performance Activity- physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle Service- engagement with the community in response to an authentic need

Important CAS Information When does IB CAS begin and end? CAS begins: first day of Junior year CAS Ends: after Marking Period 3 of Senior year What do I have to do for CAS? Record one reflection (as a journal entry) per marking period based on a CAS experience that you have participated in. Submit 10 total pieces of evidence showing proof of participation at the end of the CAS Program. (picture, certificate, etc.) Participate in a service project that we will address at an assembly later in the school year.

What is the Extended Essay (EE)? In-depth research paper that promotes research and writing skills, intellectual discovery and creativity. Student chooses topic from a list of 20 subject areas. Student chooses a mentor based on the topic. Mentor, EE coordinator and librarians assist student with finding sources and developing a research question. Represents 40 hours of research and writing. What is Theory of Knowledge (TOK)?

IB Exams Begin on May 3, 2019 and end on May 24, 2019. 2019 IB exam schedule is posted under the “IB Exams: tab under “Advanced Programs” on the CHS webpage. Exams are given for both Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) courses. At least 3 HL exams must be taken to receive an IB Diploma. Maximum of two exams can be taken by juniors (SL only). IB Diploma: -IB exams are required in all six subject areas. -IB exams are graded on a 1-7 scale. -Must achieve 24 points or higher on all six exams. -3 HL exam scores ≥ 12 points; no single HL score < 3

How do I register for IB exams? Registration forms distributed in classes (forms also located on “IB exams” tab under “Advanced Programs” ) $119/exam – check made payable to: “Commack Public Schools” www.payschools.org – to pay by credit/debit card: small surcharge per exam applies Submit completed registration form and check (or proof of credit/debit card payment) by October 15th to Ms. Bernstein in the Data Processing Office
