“The Christian’s Bar of Soap” 1 John 1:5-2:2 Teammates September 16, 2018 Lee Bennett

Soap “Soap" usually refers to what is technically called a toilet soap, used for household and personal cleaning. When used for cleaning, soap solubilizes particles and grime, which can then be separated from the article being cleaned. The insoluble oil/fat molecules become associated inside micelles, tiny spheres formed from soap molecules with polar hydrophilic (water-attracting) groups on the outside and encasing a lipophilic (fat-attracting) pocket, which shields the oil/fat molecules from the water making it soluble. Anything that is soluble will be washed away with the water. WIKI

Plunging into John’s message “And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” I John 1:5-7 NASB

Table talk What do you think John meant when he wrote that ‘God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.’? To what is John referring? Why do you think he uses such absolute terms? (i.e.-”No darkness at all.”) What are some of the benefits of walking in the light?

Further look at I John 1:8-10 “If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.” (“He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.”—Prov. 28:13)

Table talk Why would verse 9 and the surrounding verses be called “the Christian’s bar of soap”? How often should we confess sin? What is the relationship between confession of sin and our fellowship with God? Does sin destroy our status as children of God (Jn. 1:12) or just our fellowship with Him?

Further assurances to God’s children “My little children, I am writing these things to you that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation (substitutionary sacrifice) for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.” I John 2:1-2 NASB

Questions for further reflection How do these truths about confession and forgiveness apply to us in our marriages and families? Is it important or necessary to confess our sins both to God and to our spouses and children? When was the last time you did this? What is the difference between standing out in the rain and taking a bath/shower?
