Why talk about child safety ? Why us? Commonest cause of childhood deaths 1-17yrs-accidents-RTA, drownings and poisonings

Magnitude Of The Problem Bengaluru Injury Surveillance Program -1 year data in children < 18y - 209 DIED - injury. 5,505 brought to hospitals with an injury. Male to female ratio was 3:1 among deaths Majority of the children belonged to average socioeconomic households and were studying in schools.

Magnitude Of The Problem Worldwide, accidental injury kills more than 2,000 children each and every day. 75 – 90 % of these tragedies could be avoided through better safety awareness and prevention.

Avoid Keeping Sharps, Hot Items, Heavy Things On The Edge

Never leave children unattended during bath.

Home and Backyard Leave the edges of tables/platforms free. Bathing should finish uninterrupted. Electrical sockets at a good height. Use child safe switches. Vertical Door and window grills Plastics – tie with a knot in the middle.

Poisonings

Medicine cabinet -OUT OF SIGHT of kids. Use them RIGHT –Syrup X Drops Close them TIGHT

Choking

Coins are not toys, neither is food

Toys with small detachable parts are choking hazards

Discourage play while eating. Young children – mashed and grated food. Avoid toys with small detachable parts. Coins are not toys If child had chocked on something,stay with the child,watch the breathing and rush to hospital.

Pools and Water bodies

All pools should be fenced

Teaching how to swim alone does not prevent drowning

One is to one adult supervision DROWNING IS SILENT Missing child in the pool look IN FIRST, not in changing room Also, watch out for open drains, sumps & septic tanks in children play areas.

Road Traffic and Vehicles

Don'ts

Insist on safe transportation from school authorities.

Never leave your car with the keys plugged in Never leave kids in locked cars alone

Go around the car once before you start.

Model safe behavior around fires.

Lighters, matches, candles and heating appliances out of reach of children. Never hold a hot cup of tea while holding babies. Never leave the cup at edge of table.
