Open question to students. What will Work Experience do for you? What are the students’ expectations? Are they looking forward to it? Nervous about it? They possibly think it’s a waste of time. Take some comments from around the room and support open discussion.

Open question to students Open question to students. Would you buy a phone without checking it out? If no, why not? What do you want to know about the phone before spending money on it. How do you want to check it, online, review by friends, go to the shop and get their hands on it? If they would buy it without checking, what are the risks of that approach?

Open question to students Open question to students. Would you eat with a chef that had never cooked before? If not, why not? What’s the risk? The chef in the picture looks the part, do you trust him to cook you a great meal that you would be happy to pay for? What if you get food poisioning?

Open question to students Open question to students. Would you trust a doctor who’d never practised before? You’re going into a surgery, a doctor, who looks like a doctor appears. Just before they take you into surgery you learn the doctor has never done this before, would you be nervous?

Open question to students Open question to students. Would you sign up for three years of university before checking out the course? It might cost as much as £9,000 a year, would you hand over the money before doing your research? What’s the worst that could happen?

If you don’t know what you’re doing, why would an employer trust you If you don’t know what you’re doing, why would an employer trust you? Why would they give you their money if you’ve never done it before? Sure you can look the part and talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?

When someone applies for a job the employer wants the best person they can possibly get for their money. Just like you want the best phone for your money, the best meal for your money and the best education for your money. You want someone who knows what they are doing, enjoys what they do and is going to stick at it. Work Experience is a great way at a young age of trying things out to see if you like it, to understand what’s all about and if you want to invest your time in getting there. Employers really want to see young people with experience coming to them and demonstrating they can walk the walk as well as talk the talk. Open question – What will Work Experience do for you?
