Energy & Fossil Fuels A fuel is a substance that provides a form of energy as a result of a chemical change A fuel is a substance that provides a form.
Why are fossil fuels considered nonrenewable? Fossil Fuels are sources of energy that take a very long period of time to form and once depleted, are essentially.

Energy transformation- A change from one form of energy to another. 2. Fuel- a source of energy.

3. Combustion –the process of burning a fuel. 4. Fossil Fuel – energy rich substances formed from the remains of living things.

5. Hydrocarbon – energy rich substances that contain carbon and hydrogen atoms. 6. Nonrenewable resource – are natural resources that are not replaced as they are used.

7. Petroleum – is a another name for oil. 8. Refinery – a factory where crude oil is separated into fuels and other products.

9. Petrochemical – compounds made from oil. 10. Reserves – known deposits of coal, oil, and natural gas.

11. Renewable resource – they are constantly being supplied. 12. Solar energy –energy from the sun , used directly or indirectly .

13. Inexhaustible resource – a n energy resource that exists in such are large supply that it is limitless. 14. Hydroelectric Power – electricity produced by flowing water.

15. Biomass Fuel – fuel made from things that were once alive. 16. Geothermal energy – heat energy from inside the earth.

17. Nucleus – the center core of an atom that contains protons and neutrons. 18. Nuclear fission – is the splitting of an atoms nucleus into 2 small nuclei.

19. Reactor vessel – where nuclear fission takes place in a nuclear power plant. 20. Nuclear Fusion – the combine of 2 smaller nuclei to produce a single larger nuclei

21. Albert Einstein – developed a formula that described the relationship between matter and energy 22. Energy Conservation – Reducing energy use.

23. Efficiency - percentage of energy that is actually used to perform work. 24. Insulation – a layer of material that helps stop the transfer of heat.
