Points, Lines, Planes and Space

Objectives: Understand and use the basic undefined terms and defined terms of geometry. Sketch the intersections of lines and planes.

Undefined Terms A definition uses known words to describe a new word. In geometry, some words such as point, line, and plane are undefined terms. In other words, there is no formal definition for these words, but instead they are explained by using examples and descriptions which allows us to define other geometric terms and properties.

Point A point is a location in space. It has no dimension (shape or size), is usually represented by a small dot, and named by a capital letter. A Point A

Line a A line is an infinite set of points in one dimension that extends to infinity in two directions. It has no thickness or width and is usually represented by a straight line with two arrowheads. Is named by any two points on the line or a lowercase script letter. A B Line AB, AB or line a

Plane A plane is an infinite set of points that extends to infinity in ALL directions. Is represented by a shape that looks like a tabletop or wall. Is named by a capital script letter or 3 points not on the same line. Since a point has no size a plane has no thickness A B C M Plane ABC or plane M

Space Space is a boundless, three dimensional infinite set of points. It contains points, lines, and planes.

More basic undefined terms . . . Collinear points are points that lie on the same line. Non-Collinear Coplanar points are points that lie on the same plane. Non-coplanar

Example 1: Name three points that are collinear Solution: D, E and F lie on the same line, so they are collinear. H G E F D

Example 2: Name four points that are coplanar. Solution: D, E, F, and G lie on the same plane, so they are coplanar. Also D, E, F, and H are coplanar; although, the plane containing them is not drawn. H G E F D

Example 3: Name three points that are non-collinear. Solution: There are many correct answers. For instance, points H, E, and G do not lie on the same line. H G E F D

More Definitions… Intersection: when two geometric figures share a common point or set of points. Postulate / Axiom: A statement in geometry accepted as true w/ out proof. Theorem: A statement in geometry that can be proven using logical reasoning.

Intersections of Lines & Planes Postulate: A line, plane and space each contain an infinite set of points. Postulate: For any two points there is exactly one line that contains them. Postulate: For any three non-collinear points there is exactly one plane containing them. Postulate: If two points are in a plane then the line containing them is in the plane. Postulate: Two distinct planes intersect in exactly one line Postulate: Two distinct lines intersect in exactly one point

Intersecting Lines Cont… Name All the lines intersecting through 3 points. Name all the Different lines intersecting through 3 points

Example 4: How to sketch a line that intersects a plane in one point Draw a plane and a line. Emphasize the point where they meet. Use dashes to indicate where the line is hidden by the plane.

Example 5: How to sketch two planes that intersect in a line. Draw two planes. Emphasize the line where they meet. Use dashes to indicate where one plane is hidden by the other plane.

Definition of Betweeness If three points lie on the same line (collinear) then one point must be between the other two.
