Objective Our plan was to demonstrate how the Fluke equipment/software could be used to increase the efficiency of Technicians and Electricians when troubleshooting or performing preventive maintenance. To execute this plan, we were going to perform measurements at a local ethanol plant, but after checking with a couple of plants, we couldn’t actually perform the work on sight. We decided to mock up a system at the school and use it in our project. The goal of our project was to develop an understanding of the Fluke equipment, understand how ethanol is produced and enjoy the process of developing a video, something none of us has every done. General summary A: Demonstrate how the Fluke equipment would be used to decrease the time it took to record and save data while doing a preventive maintenance routine. B: Demonstrate how data could be captured and shared with others to help identify a defective component during a troubleshooting experience. C: Demonstrate how calibration data could be accessed while in the field to troubleshoot a process. steps and measurements your team would take. How will you document what you do? (Something like: Decrease manhours required to do XYZ by 30%, by using the Fluke Connect tool system) (Some type of metric needs to be used to document your project’s effectiveness. What non-electrical aspects you will measure to document success? Problem fixed/work completed in less time = measuring time/manhours. Less money = documenting component cost. Less energy = kWh @ utility rate $X. Etc. The ideal project will include a before/after comparison – how much the work required before the project, compared to after) 11/14/2018 2014 FACT Training

Methodology Description of setup/work done, including: Since we could not work in an ethanol plant we decided to mock up a diverter gate. We developed a PLC program, we created HMI screens for operator interface, wired a forward/reverse starter to a 3 phase motor, wired pushbuttons for local control and connected inductive proximity switches for end of travel sensors. For the troubleshooting segment, one of the Technicians suggested that we place an open in one of the phases and then troubleshoot the diverter gate system. Once the system was repaired and placed back into service, a preventive maintenance work order would be triggered. Using what kind of tools 3000 FC Multimeter, A3001 FC AC Current Module T3000 FC K-Type Temperature Module 789 Process Meter with ir3000 FC connector 805 FC Vibration Meter TiS40 Thermal Imager Taking what kind of measurements We measures AC voltage, AC current, Resistance, Vibration, Temperature, motor windings and thermal imaged electrical enclosures. In what kind of facility We wanted to work in the ethanol plant but had to change the plan and mock it up in the classroom. We did visit local plants and did visit with Technicians and Electricians to develop an understanding of the process and equipment used. Steps/outline (what did you do) 1. Visited ethanol plants, talked with technicians and electricians. 2. Developed an understanding of the Fluke equipment and software. 3. Reviewed procedures used at plants and developed modifications to their processes. 4. Developed a story centered around a diverter gate and distillation column 5. Enlisted other programs/students to help in the video production 6. Shot footage, edited and rendered video and uploaded to YouTube. 11/14/2018 2014 FACT Training

Results Tables & other means to visually document results, using the metrics you defined earlier We suggested changes to technicians and electricians, concerning current practices and asked them to evaluate the changes. Unfortunately, because of company policy, the individuals were not able to openly represent their company and can not share the change’s in their practices. However, they did provide us with positive feedback. They did share with us that they see that using this system would benefit the documentation requirement and ultimately reduce the man-hours to accomplish some of the tasks. Links to video https://youtu.be/2FAVv0fdlb0 How do you anticipate that using the Fluke Connect app and tools will impact business? For example, what is the change before/after using Fluke Connect as demonstrated by what kind of Metric? Sample metrics include hours to complete job, cost of parts, estimated years life extension of equipment, reduction in load draw extrapolated into energy use reduction. You can reference work orders, energy usage reports and other collateral that showcase time or costs savings. 11/14/2018 2014 FACT Training

Impact & Recommendations How did your project make a difference? We looked at our project in three different views Develop an understanding of how to use the Fluke Connect Equipment/software Develop an understanding of how ethanol is produced Review current safety practices, troubleshooting steps and preventive maintenance routines and evaluate how the Fluke system could fit into the current procedures and make changes to integrate the Fluke Connect system into current practices. Would you recommend that others apply your process? If so, what specific advice would you give them? (Aka, workflow steps, process change, what to look for, etc.) We did recommend to Electricians and Technicians some of the changes and was encouraged by them that they plan on sharing these with others at the plant. Why do you think the wireless Fluke Connect tools and smart phone app will make a difference, compared to existing technology / methodology? AKA, why can’t your project/improvement be accomplished without Fluke Connect? Why should it be used by technicians in plant, industrial, and commercial settings. 11/14/2018 2014 FACT Training

Thanks so much for this opportunity! Lessons learned We have learned so much doing this project. We increased our technical skills, people skills, organizational skills, self-management skills and how ethanol is produced. One disappointment though, we had wanted to develop a segment on a distillation column, which would include process troubleshooting, transmitter calibrations and valve verification but we had to abandon that because of the length of video and the project submission deadline. Lessons Learned: How to use the Fluke Connect system Learned the major processes of ethanol production Learned how the diverter gate functions. How the distillation column functions. How to Developing a story board Organizing and plan a video production How to Organizing people, How to place people to video tape them How to use Camtasia software, video editing software How to hit deadlines Thanks so much for this opportunity! 11/14/2018 2014 FACT Training
