Why Are We in This Mess? June 10

Admit it, now … What makes forbidden things so tempting? Temptations come at us from many directions Our inborn sinful nature is why we so easily fall into temptation Today we study how the opportunity for a perfect relationship with God has been ruined because of sin.

Listen for sneaky questions. Genesis 3:1-7 (NIV) Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" 2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'" 4 "You will not surely die,"

Listen for sneaky questions. the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom,

Listen for sneaky questions. she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

Sin – Failure to Keep God’s Commands What did the serpent ask the woman? How did Satan’s version of what God said differ from what God actually said? Why did the serpent say that God did not want the woman to eat the forbidden fruit? How did she change her opinion of the forbidden fruit? How does Satan distort the truth today? Satan’s Version God’s Version

Sin – Failure to Keep God’s Commands What people, situations, fears, pressures prompt a person to rebel against God today? Why do we pick and choose which of God’s commands to obey? Paul said, “But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” 1 Cor. 10:13 (NIV) How can we recognize these places of escape from Satan’s temptations?

Listen for God’s judgment. Genesis 3:14-15 (NIV) So the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, "Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."

Serpent Ultimately Defeated How did God punish the serpent? Note the use of the word “enmity” describing God’s declaration of the relationship between Eve and the serpent. What are some synonyms for this word?

Serpent Ultimately Defeated This is a prophecy that speaks to much more than just fear, hate or squeamishness about snakes. Coming of the Messiah – Eve’s eventual offspring Penalty of sin defeated Judgment taken by Jesus Power of sin and evil broken Satan eternally banned to hell Satan would “strike the heel” of the Messiah Jesus’ death and resurrection would crush Satan So, How do these verses apply to the Gospel, the Good News today?

Consequences of Sin What are some synonyms for “consequences” Listen for the consequences of Adam and Eve’s disobedience.

Listen for the consequences of Adam and Eve’s disobedience. Genesis 3:16-19 (NIV) To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." 17 To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' "Cursed is the

Consequences of Sin So,  what were some different kinds of consequences for Adam and Eve? Adam and Eve in the garden (then thrown out) experienced consequences as they chose to sin. What consequences of sin do people experience when they choose to sin? Spiritual Emotional

Consequences of Sin Agree or disagree? Why? Be happy when people suffer consequences Yes, and be angry at people who are getting away with their sin! Agree or disagree? Why? What can long time Christians do to help people understand that sin has consequences? Agree Disagree

Application Memorize Our sins can be forgiven if we confess them to God. Memorize 1 John 1:9”If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” Receive this as a promise and source of encouragement as you confess your sins to God.

Application Seek forgiveness. If your sin involves someone else, ask their forgiveness. Seek to make amends for your part in hurting another person or harming your relationship.

Application Avoid sin. If certain sins are a constant struggle for you, determine what makes it easy for you to give in to the temptation. Make a plan for removing those things from your life. If specific individuals encourage or enable your sin, stop associating with them.
